Improving lighting in the mosques of Medina: Qiblatain and Sayyid al-Shuhada

As part of ongoing efforts to care for mosques and improve services for pilgrims, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, under the direct guidance and supervision of His Excellency the Minister, Sheikh Dr. Abdul Latif bin Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, implemented a significant project aimed at enhancing lighting in the historic mosques of Madinah. The project included a comprehensive upgrade of the lighting systems in the Qiblatain Mosque, the Sayyid al-Shuhada Mosque, and the Friday Mosque, through the Ministry's branch in the Madinah region (Projects and Maintenance Department).
Details of the modern lighting project
The renovation work at the Qiblatain Mosque included replacing 1,500 interior lighting units with modern ones featuring a soft glow and a color temperature of 3,000 Kelvin, providing visual comfort for worshippers. The system was also equipped with photovoltaic cells and smart timers to conserve energy, in harmony with the architectural style of the mosque and the surrounding cultural center. Similarly, the work extended to the Sayyid al-Shuhada Mosque and the Friday Mosque, where 140 exterior floodlights and modern interior units were installed at the former, and 35 exterior floodlights at the latter, ensuring high energy efficiency and creating an atmosphere of tranquility and peace.
The historical significance and religious status of the targeted mosques
This project is not merely technical; it delves into the depths of Islamic history, as these mosques represent significant landmarks in the Prophet's biography. The Qiblatain Mosque witnessed the change of the qibla (direction of prayer) from Al-Aqsa Mosque to the Grand Mosque in Mecca, making it a crucial destination for visitors seeking to experience this historical moment. The Sayyid al-Shuhada Mosque, situated on the site of the immortal Battle of Uhud, is associated with the memory of Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may God be pleased with him) and the martyrs of Uhud. The Friday Mosque derives its importance from being the location where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the first Friday prayer in Medina upon his arrival as a migrant. Preserving these landmarks and highlighting their architectural beauty through carefully planned lighting strengthens visitors' connection to authentic Islamic heritage.
The impact of improved lighting in the city's mosques on the visitor experience
carries to improve lighting in the city's mosques strategic dimensions that extend beyond mere routine maintenance. It directly contributes to the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to enrich the experience of pilgrims, Umrah performers, and visitors. Modern lighting highlights the unique architectural details of these historic mosques, adding an aesthetic and spiritual dimension that deepens the faith of those who visit. Furthermore, the adoption of energy-saving technologies reflects the Kingdom's commitment to environmental sustainability standards and resource conservation, making these mosques exemplary models for blending historical authenticity with technological modernity.
