The cruise ship MV Hondios, en route from Argentina to Cape Verde, became the focus of international attention after the World Health Organization announced the deaths of three passengers on board. Maria Van Kerkhove, Director of the WHO's Department of Pandemic Preparedness and Response, explained that this incident "is not the start of an epidemic or pandemic, but it is an opportunity to reiterate the importance of investing in research focused on pathogens, because treatments, vaccines, and diagnostics save lives.".
A Dutch couple who had been on a South American cruise before boarding the ship in Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1st became the first victims of the outbreak. Argentine health authorities stated that they have not yet been able to pinpoint the exact origin of the outbreak, emphasizing that the source of the infection cannot be confirmed based on the currently available information.

To date, there are no vaccines or specific treatments for this disease. The ship has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, where the remaining passengers and crew, numbering approximately 150, will undergo close medical monitoring before being allowed to return home. The WHO has also notified 12 countries whose citizens disembarked on the island of Saint Helena to monitor their health, while Argentina announced it is sending approximately 2,500 virus testing kits to five countries to assist in early containment efforts.
