King Salman Relief Center pumps 54 million liters of water in Yemen

As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting and alleviating the suffering of our brothers and sisters, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center continued implementing its water supply and environmental sanitation project in several Yemeni regions. The project aimed to meet the basic needs of displaced persons and the most vulnerable families in the districts of Midi, Haradh, Hayran, and Abs in Hajjah Governorate, as well as the Al-Azhour camp for displaced persons in the Razih district of Saada Governorate, Yemen, as part of a series of sustainable humanitarian initiatives.

Achievements of the King Salman Relief Center during the month of February

Last February witnessed intensive efforts by the center's field teams, resulting in record-breaking levels of water and environmental assistance. In Hajjah Governorate, the center successfully pumped 3,775,000 liters of potable water, in addition to 49,876,000 liters of water suitable for daily use. These efforts extended beyond water provision to include environmental protection and public health, with 233 dedicated waste removal operations conducted in camps for internally displaced persons.

In Sa'dah Governorate, specifically in Al-Azhour camp, 393,400 liters of potable water were pumped, in addition to 280,000 liters of water designated for general use. These vital and well-planned interventions have contributed to improving living conditions and providing a safe and healthy environment for approximately 30,100 direct beneficiaries.

Background to the humanitarian crisis and challenges facing the water sector in Yemen

Yemen has historically been one of the world's most water-scarce countries, with a large segment of the population relying on unsafe water sources. Since the outbreak of the crisis and the escalation of armed conflict in late 2014, the water and sanitation infrastructure has suffered widespread destruction. This deterioration has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, making access to clean drinking water a daily challenge for millions of Yemenis and contributing to the spread of epidemics and waterborne diseases. Therefore, urgent and sustainable interventions are crucial to provide a lifeline to affected communities and displaced persons who have lost access to basic necessities.

Regional and local impact of environmental sanitation projects

These relief projects have a profound impact, extending from the local to the regional and international levels. Locally, these supplies help save lives, reduce the spread of infectious diseases, and alleviate the financial and physical burden on displaced families who previously had to travel long distances to obtain water. These efforts also strengthen the stability of local communities within their areas, preventing new waves of displacement.

At the regional and international levels, these initiatives reflect the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s leading role in global humanitarian work. These interventions are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 6, which aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all. The continuation of these projects underscores the donors’ commitment to standing with the Yemeni people in their most difficult circumstances, thereby strengthening humanitarian security and stability across the entire region.
