Health monitoring intensified in Mecca and the holy sites to ensure the safety of pilgrims
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to dedicate all its resources to serving the pilgrims. The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing announced the intensification of health inspections in Mecca and the Holy Sites. This strategic step is part of the comprehensive operational preparations for the 1447 AH Hajj season, aimed at enhancing compliance and raising the level of public safety in all food and commercial establishments serving pilgrims, thus ensuring a healthy and safe environment throughout the pilgrimage.
A historic development in serving the guests of God
For decades, the care and safety of pilgrims has been a top priority for the Saudi leadership. Historically, municipal services provided during the Hajj season have evolved from simple organizational efforts into a comprehensive institutional system utilizing the latest global technologies. This development reflects the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to providing the utmost comfort and peace of mind to the millions of Muslims who flock annually from all corners of the earth. This accumulation of knowledge and experience has resulted in a robust infrastructure and exceptional capabilities in crowd management and ensuring the availability of food and medicine, making the Saudi experience in managing Hajj seasons a global model to be emulated in dealing with massive human gatherings.
Health control system in Mecca and the holy sites
To ensure the highest quality standards, the Ministry explained that the current operational system includes more than 380 inspectors specializing in food safety and catering, in addition to 403 environmental health personnel. This qualified staff supports the efficiency of field inspections and enhances response times at all targeted locations. At the heart of these operations lies the importance of health monitoring in Mecca and the Holy Sites, achieved through the operation of five advanced laboratories with a capacity to test up to 1,300 samples daily, equivalent to one sample per minute. Furthermore, inspectors conduct more than 2,800 daily inspection visits to food and commercial establishments, directly contributing to improved compliance levels and enhanced service efficiency.
Advanced infrastructure to facilitate mobility
In addition to health efforts, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing announced, as part of its operational plans for the 1447 AH Hajj season, the construction and maintenance of over 11 million linear meters of roads and the treatment and development of approximately 74 million square meters of road surfaces. To ensure smooth traffic flow, 123 pedestrian and vehicular bridges and 44 underpasses were made operational, with an additional 62 underpasses prepared as part of the transportation system in the Holy Sites. Preparations also included the operation of 66 field service centers, 28 of which are located within the Holy Sites, and the equipping of 20 pedestrian bridges and 18 underpasses in high-traffic areas. To enhance safety at night, more than 330,000 lighting units and 150,000 light poles were activated in Mecca and the Holy Sites.

The Ministry also recognized the importance of community participation, mobilizing over 4,500 male and female volunteers through its regional secretariats as part of the municipal volunteering system. These volunteers work alongside official staff to provide support and assistance to pilgrims at key locations, entry points, and along roads leading to the holy sites, embodying the values of Islamic solidarity and supporting operational and service efforts throughout the Hajj season.
