The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Wednesday a significant security development concerning the safety of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran, confirming that the facility was struck by a projectile on Tuesday evening. The agency reassured the international community that no damage was sustained to the plant's infrastructure and that no injuries were reported among its personnel, allaying immediate concerns about a potential radioactive leak.
The Vienna-based agency explained via its official X platform that it had received official notification from Iranian authorities that a projectile had landed near the facility. In this context, the agency's Director General, Rafael Grossi, reiterated his urgent appeal to all parties to exercise maximum restraint during armed conflicts, warning that any escalation could lead to a catastrophic nuclear accident.

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is Iran's only operational nuclear power facility, with a generating capacity of approximately 1,000 megawatts, representing a small fraction of the country's growing electricity needs. Moscow described the attack on the nuclear power plant, which it helped build and which houses Russian experts, as “irresponsible.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that her country condemns this completely unacceptable act, which targeted the inner perimeter of the plant just meters from one of the operational units.
In her statement, Zakharova added that Moscow had repeatedly warned the United States and Israel against endangering the lives and health of Russian citizens and experts at the site. The Russian Foreign Ministry called on all parties involved to immediately abandon any plans or actions targeting nuclear facilities, given the real risks such practices pose, which could lead to a large-scale radiological and environmental disaster affecting the stability of the entire region.
