The Kingdom at the Security Council: Condemning Iran's attacks and supporting maritime security

The Saudi representative affirmed during a recent session that the Kingdom's position in the Security Council is firm and clear, strongly condemning Iran's recent attacks and emphasizing the need for Tehran to abide by its commitments and international agreements. The representative explained that Saudi Arabia supports all efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region to ensure regional and international stability.
The importance of protecting waterways and securing energy supplies
The Saudi delegate noted that maintaining the security of energy, food, and medicine shipping lanes is a top priority for the international community. He emphasized in particular that the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz must remain a primary global concern. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important waterways, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes. Historically, this strait has witnessed numerous tensions that have directly impacted energy markets, making any threat to the safety of navigation there a direct threat to the entire global economy, which explains the intensive diplomatic efforts to protect it.
International efforts to ensure maritime safety
In this context, the UN Security Council held an expanded meeting to discuss “the safety and protection of waterways in the maritime domain.” This meeting came amid escalating international concerns about the potentially catastrophic consequences of closing the Strait of Hormuz or disrupting global trade. The important meeting, convened at the invitation of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the current president of the Council, under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security,” was attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Domínguez.
The meeting was also attended by Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, along with several other foreign ministers and representatives of member states. In his address, Al Zayani emphasized that freedom of navigation is a cornerstone of international law and peace, stressing the need for full compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which regulates maritime rights, the right of innocent passage through international straits, and other maritime rights. He affirmed that adherence to these laws is the key to avoiding conflicts.
Dimensions and implications of the Kingdom's position in the Security Council, regionally and internationally
The statements made by the Kingdom at the Security Council carry profound implications and far-reaching effects on various levels. Regionally, Saudi Arabia reaffirms its leading role in striving for stability in the Middle East and preventing the region from sliding into armed conflicts that could destroy infrastructure and disrupt development. Internationally, this stance sends a reassuring message to global markets that there are active forces working diligently to protect the global economy from the shocks of energy supply shortages.
The continued tensions and attacks in the waterways not only threaten the Gulf states but also extend their impact by raising insurance and shipping costs, negatively affecting commodity prices worldwide. Therefore, concerted international efforts are crucial to ensuring all parties respect the sovereignty of nations and freedom of navigation, a point Saudi diplomacy has strongly emphasized within the United Nations to maintain international peace and security.
