Raids on (3) illegal furniture recycling sites in Jeddah

revealed The Jeddah Governorate Municipality, in cooperation with relevant authorities,address negative phenomena, during a joint field campaign.

Yasser bin Siraj Bakhsh, Director General of the General Administration for Monitoring and Addressing Negative Phenomena, explained that the field teams observed workers managing the site and exploiting the “waste” of used sponge and cotton, processing it with primitive methods within an unhealthy environment, through cutting, pressing and packing operations, in preparation for recycling it and producing furniture that is later marketed and distributed to commercial stores.

He explained that the sites contain operational equipment used in production processes, while the campaign resulted in the arrest of two workers who were handed over to the competent authorities for violating residency and work regulations.

He added that the inventory work resulted in the seizure of large quantities of furniture, of which (5,000) usable pieces were handed over in accordance with the procedures followed, while the concerned authorities began to seize and confiscate the equipment, as the Jeddah Company began to dismantle and remove the heavy machinery.

Systematic procedures

He noted that the sites were completely shut down by the Southern Sub-Municipality, pending completion of the necessary procedures and application of the municipal penalties and fines regulations.
He added that the campaign was carried out in cooperation with the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, the Ministry of Commerce, the Field Control Department, and the Civil Defense, as part of integrated government efforts to enhance compliance and curb illegal activities.
