Riyadh: Project to develop the intersection of Al-Thumama and Uthman Bin Affan roads begins

announced The Royal Commission for Riyadh City the development project for the intersection of Al-Thumama and Uthman Bin Affan Roads, as part of the program to develop ring roads and main thoroughfares. This program is based on the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 to enhance quality of life and support an integrated and sustainable urban transport system in the capital.
The Commission explained that the project is considered vital in northeast Riyadh and aims to create a multi-level intersection that ensures smooth traffic flow and improves the quality of mobility, keeping pace with the city's rapid urban expansion.
It stated that the project includes the construction of four main bridges with a total length of approximately 2,000 meters to connect different directions without interruption, in addition to a main tunnel 850 meters long with three lanes in each direction to ensure continuous traffic flow on Al-Thumama Road.
The project also includes developing surrounding roads by upgrading their efficiency, converting Uthman Bin Affan Road into a free-flowing three-lane highway in each direction, and enhancing Al-Thumama Road as a main artery for through traffic. Furthermore, the project includes the construction of service roads with two lanes in each direction to serve neighborhoods and local activities.
Complete traffic flow
The authority indicated that the project will contribute to achieving seamless traffic flow without traffic lights, reducing travel times, especially during peak hours, and enhancing road safety, in addition to improving emergency response through continuous, uninterrupted lanes.
It added that the project aims to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, thus improving air quality, as well as enhancing the urban landscape through sidewalk construction and landscaping, supporting the investment value of surrounding neighborhoods, and strengthening the integration of the road network in the northeast of the capital.
Regarding the implementation period, the authority explained that it has taken several measures, including preparing temporary traffic diversions, continuous on-site monitoring to ensure smooth traffic flow, installing clear directional signs, and implementing precautionary measures to enhance safety in the work zone.
It urged road users to adhere to traffic instructions, leave early to avoid congestion, stay updated on traffic developments, and allow extra time for their journeys during the project's implementation.
It stated that the traffic diversions will be activated starting from April 16, 2026, with the unified number (19998) allocated to receive inquiries, stressing its keenness to provide a smoother and more comfortable transportation experience for the residents and visitors of the capital.
