Coastal protection efforts in Jeddah: 40 rescues and 402 patrols

The Jeddah Municipality revealed the results of its monitoring and field operations dedicated to enhancing the protection of Jeddah's coastline during the first quarter of the year. The figures show that 402 monitoring tours were conducted, along with approximately 3,870 hours of field patrols. These intensive efforts aim to ensure the safety of beachgoers and preserve the stunning marine environment that characterizes the "Bride of the Red Sea." These operations resulted in the successful handling of 40 rescue incidents by specialized teams, in addition to the issuance of 350 navigation permits, all within the framework of enforcing regulations governing maritime uses, which cover a vast geographical area extending approximately 530 kilometers.
The evolution of maritime surveillance efforts and the history of interest in the Red Sea coasts
The Red Sea has always been a vital artery and an integral part of Jeddah's identity and rich history. Over the decades, maritime surveillance mechanisms have evolved in response to increasing population growth and the significant influx of tourists to the "Bride of the Red Sea." Historically, efforts were limited to traditional coastal monitoring, but with technological advancements and urban expansion, the need for a comprehensive system became paramount. Today, surveillance operations are conducted by a modern fleet equipped with state-of-the-art tracking systems and advanced operational technologies that ensure real-time monitoring. This historic transformation in coastal management reflects the Kingdom's commitment to implementing the highest international standards in water resource management and environmental protection.
Prompt handling of reports to ensure the protection of Jeddah's coastlines
The Deputy Mayor of Jeddah for Coastal Protection and Monitoring, Captain Thamer Nahhas, explained that field operations rooms are working around the clock, seven days a week, to respond immediately and effectively to all reports and emergencies. To ensure the protection of Jeddah's coastline, inspection tours included close monitoring of commercial beaches and resorts to verify their full compliance with safety and rescue regulations. The municipality is committed to the safety of facilities and activities offered to the public, and affirms its continued efforts, in an integrated manner with various relevant authorities, to develop the environmental monitoring system and enhance the quality of services provided to visitors and tourists.
Strategic dimensions and overall impact of marine environmental safety
The significance of these achievements extends beyond the local level to encompass important regional and international dimensions. Locally, these initiatives directly contribute to improving the quality of life and achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 by creating a safe and sustainable coastal environment that meets the aspirations of visitors and enhances Jeddah's position as a leading tourist destination. Regionally and internationally, this firm commitment to protecting the marine environment reflects the Kingdom's active role in preserving the biodiversity of the Red Sea, one of the world's most important and biodiverse waterways. The Secretariat noted that the operational scope of the monitoring extends effectively from Rabigh Governorate in the north to Al-Qunfudhah Governorate in the south, contributing to the protection of natural resources and ensuring their sustainability for future generations, while providing a model to be emulated globally in integrated environmental management.
