Today's weather: Dense fog reduces visibility in 5 Saudi regions

issued The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia weather , warning of varying intensity fog affecting large parts of five major regions in the Kingdom. The center explained that this weather condition began in the early hours of Monday morning and is expected to continue until 8:00 AM, urging motorists to exercise caution.

Weather details and affected areas

The weather report indicated that the atmospheric phenomenon ranged from light to dense fog, leading to a decrease in horizontal visibility to between 3 and 5 kilometers in some locations, while it dropped sharply to near zero (1 to 3 kilometers) in others. In areas of dense fog, the center warned of near-zero visibility (less than one kilometer), and the following areas were included in the warnings:

  • Eastern region: The situation is concentrated in several areas.
  • Makkah Region: Includes Al Qunfudhah, Al Ardiyat, Taif, Adham, and Maysan.
  • Asir region: It covers Abha, Ahad Rafidah, Al Harjah, Al Rabwa, Al Farsha, Khamis Mushait, Sarat Abidah, Dhahran Al Janoub, Al Birk, Al Qahmah, Al Majardah, Bariq, Rijal Alma, Mahayil, Al Namas, Balqarn, and Tanomah.
  • Al-Baha region: includes Al-Hujrah, Al-Makhwah, Far’ah Ghamid Al-Zanad, Qalwah, Al-Qura, Al-Mandaq, Al-Baha city, Baljurashi, and Bani Hassan.
  • Jazan region: Affects Al-Harth, Al-Dayer, Al-Raith, Al-Ardah, Al-Aydabi, Al-Fatihah, Fifa, and Haroub.

Geographical and climatic context

These weather fluctuations are part of the Kingdom's geographical characteristics. Mountainous regions like the Sarawat Mountains (which extend across Asir, Al-Baha, and Makkah) experience a significant drop in temperatures during the night and early morning hours, contributing to the condensation of water vapor and the formation of dense fog. This phenomenon is also common in coastal and mountainous areas during the transitional seasons and winter, where high humidity from the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf plays a pivotal role in the formation of these low-lying clouds.

The importance of warnings and safety measures

This warning is of paramount importance due to its direct impact on traffic flow, particularly on highways and rugged mountain roads connecting the provinces. Relevant authorities, including the Special Forces for Road Security, urge drivers to adhere to safe driving practices, use fog lights, and maintain a safe following distance to avoid traffic accidents that may result from reduced visibility. Those with respiratory conditions are also advised to avoid direct exposure to cold and humid air during these periods to protect their health.
