Developing the Dhu al-Hulayfah Miqat: Integrated services for pilgrims
The historical and spiritual significance of the Miqat of Dhu al-Hulayfah
is undergoing The Dhul-Hulayfah Miqat an unprecedented comprehensive development and renovation project as part of an integrated strategy to enhance the services provided to pilgrims. Historically known as "Abar Ali," this Miqat is one of the most prominent designated locations for pilgrims to enter the state of Ihram, established by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for the people of Madinah and those passing through it. It is the furthest Miqat from Makkah, marking the beginning of the pilgrimage journey to the Grand Mosque. These development efforts aim to elevate the spiritual experience for visitors, aligning with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the Guests of God Service Program, ensuring the highest levels of care for pilgrims and Umrah performers from around the world.
A massive expansion and increased capacity for worshippers
The projects implemented at the mosque include a significant leap in capacity, with the prayer areas now accommodating over 15,000 worshippers, compared to 5,000 previously. In addition to the architectural expansion, the development plan encompassed a complete overhaul of the internal services system. The carpets in the prayer hall were replaced with new ones, reflecting the mosque's distinctive visual identity, covering an area exceeding 2,400 square meters. The sound system was also upgraded with the latest global technologies, utilizing advanced microphones and a digital sound mixing system managed via a central control unit connected to over 190 internal and external speakers, ensuring high-fidelity sound for all worshippers.
Improving infrastructure and the urban landscape
The development work wasn't limited to the interior; it extended to the external courtyards and surrounding facilities. More than 24 main and secondary pathways and axes were constructed to facilitate smooth traffic flow within the Miqat area, reducing congestion during peak times. To enhance the urban and environmental landscape, over 600 trees and shrubs were planted in the surrounding courtyards, adding aesthetic appeal and providing shaded areas for visitors. Furthermore, more than 7,000 spotlights and lighting poles were installed, increasing operational efficiency and ensuring optimal illumination of the site around the clock.
Service integration and the impact of developing the Dhu al-Hulayfah Miqat on pilgrims
To ensure all visitors' needs are met, the developed area includes more than 40 diverse shops and retail outlets, including cafes, restaurants, stores selling Hajj-related supplies, and support services. This commercial diversity not only serves pilgrims but also contributes to supporting the local economy and providing new job opportunities for residents. From a security and operational standpoint, the courtyards and facilities are equipped with a modern surveillance system comprising more than 300 digital cameras, enhancing monitoring efficiency and providing a safe and reassuring environment for pilgrims. This comprehensive development has a significant positive impact both regionally and internationally, reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to providing the best possible services to the millions of Muslims who flock annually to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind.
Architectural harmony with Wadi Al-Aqiq
In a related context, the work included the development of the Wadi Al-Aqiq Corniche adjacent to the mosque. This project was designed with meticulous engineering to achieve a visual extension that harmonizes with the mosque's architecture, using architectural elements inspired by its authentic Islamic identity. This integration contributes to creating a cultural destination connected to the historical landmarks of Madinah. These achievements fall within the purview of the Madinah Region Development Authority, in active partnership with the Guests of God Service Program and other relevant entities, as part of ongoing preparations to provide an exceptional experience during the Hajj season of 1447 AH and beyond.
