Thunderstorms expected in Saudi Arabia until Friday: Civil Defense warnings

Several regions in Saudi Arabia are experiencing ongoing weather fluctuations, with the National Center for Meteorology forecasting continued thunderstorms until next Friday. Based on these weather reports, the General Directorate of Civil Defense has urged everyone to exercise caution, remain in safe locations, avoid areas prone to flash floods and valleys, and refrain from swimming in them. They also stressed the importance of strictly adhering to instructions disseminated through various media outlets and social media platforms.

Map of areas affected by the expected weather conditions

According to data released by the National Center for Meteorology, the Makkah region will be affected by moderate to heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods and hail, accompanied by strong downdrafts and dust storms. This weather pattern includes the areas of Turabah, Al-Muwayh, Al-Khurmah, Ranyah, Taif, Maysan, Adham, and Al-Ardiyat, while the Holy City of Makkah, Al-Jumum, and Al-Kamil will experience light to moderate rain.

The Riyadh region will also experience moderate to heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods, hail, and strong downdrafts that will stir up dust. The affected areas include the capital city of Riyadh, Al-Dilam, Al-Muzahmiya, Dhurma, Marat, Al-Qiddiya, Ad-Diriyah, Ar-Rin, Al-Hariq, Al-Kharj, Hawtat Bani Tamim, Afif, Ad-Dawadmi, Al-Quway'iyah, Al-Ghat, Az-Zulfi, Al-Majma'ah, Shaqra, Thadiq, Huraymila, and Rumah. The effects of this weather system will also extend to the regions of Madinah, Hail, Al-Qassim, the Northern Borders, the Eastern Province, Tabuk, Al-Jawf, Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran.

The historical context of the weather fluctuations phenomenon in the Kingdom

The transitional periods between seasons in the Arabian Peninsula are among the most volatile times of the year. Historically, the Kingdom experiences what are known as monsoon and winter rainy seasons, during which cold air masses from the north converge with warm, humid air masses from the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. This climatic convergence leads to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds that produce heavy rainfall over short periods, causing flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas. This explains the critical importance of the Civil Defense's frequent warnings to protect lives and property.

Expected impacts and the importance of preparedness for thunderstorms in Saudi Arabia

The importance of monitoring weather fluctuations extends beyond simply observing the daily weather; it directly impacts transportation, economic activities, and education. Locally, these early warnings enable municipal and service authorities to raise their level of preparedness for rainwater drainage and prevent traffic congestion in major cities like Riyadh and Jeddah. Regionally, these measures reflect the significant development in the Kingdom's early warning system and crisis and disaster management, minimizing human and material losses and ensuring the efficient continuity of operations under various challenging weather conditions.
