Tarahum Endowment Fund in Jazan to support prisoners and released inmates

In a significant step reflecting the growing interest in sustainable charitable work and social development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Mohammed bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Jazan Region, inaugurated the “Tarham Endowment Fund.” The inauguration, attended by Mr. Abdullah Al-Shamrani, Chairman of the National Sub-Committee for the Care of Prisoners’ Families and Released Prisoners in the region, and several committee members, marks the beginning of a new phase of organized institutional support for this important segment of society.

His Royal Highness the Prince of Jazan listened to a detailed explanation of the fund's objectives and operational mechanisms. The fund aims to establish a sustainable investment model that ensures continuous and renewable financial support for prisoners, released inmates, and their families. The fund is based on the concept of Islamic endowment (waqf), which is considered one of the most important tools for community development. The fund's assets are invested, and the returns are directed towards financing care, rehabilitation, and social empowerment programs, thus ensuring the continuity of support without relying entirely on seasonal donations.

General context and the role of the "Compassion" committees

The National Committee for the Care of Prisoners, Released Prisoners, and Their Families (Tarahum) is one of the Kingdom's leading civil society organizations, established by a Cabinet decision to provide comprehensive care for this group. Tarahum's committees, spread throughout the Kingdom, work to mitigate the negative effects of the imprisonment of the family's breadwinner by providing financial and in-kind assistance, psychological and educational support for children, and implementing specialized programs to rehabilitate released prisoners, help them reintegrate into society, and find suitable employment opportunities. This directly contributes to reducing recidivism rates.

The importance of the fund and its expected impact

His Royal Highness the Prince of Jazan affirmed that the launch of this endowment fund stems from the great attention the wise leadership – may God support them – pays to everything that promotes charitable and sustainable development work. The fund is expected to have a multifaceted positive impact

  • At the local level (Jazan): The fund will provide a stable financial source for the “Tarham” committee in Jazan, enabling it to expand its services, improve their quality, reach a larger number of needy families, and provide them with a decent life, especially for children who are affected by the absence of their breadwinner.
  • At the national level, this fund serves as a model for other branches of the committee across the Kingdom, encouraging the adoption of innovative and sustainable financial solutions in the non-profit sector. It also aligns perfectly with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to increase the non-profit sector's contribution to the GDP and strengthen social solidarity.
  • Social and economic impact: Through rehabilitation and empowerment programs, the Fund contributes to transforming released individuals from people in need of support into productive and active members of society, thus easing the burden on the state and enhancing social security and family stability.

During the inauguration, His Highness was briefed on the Fund’s operational plans and investment paths, and the mechanisms adopted to direct its returns to support programs dedicated to the beneficiary groups, in order to achieve financial sustainability, maximize social impact, and raise the efficiency of services provided in the Jazan region.
