Floods in Qassim: Two people rescued, driver punished

The General Directorate of Civil Defense in Saudi Arabia announced the successful rescue of two people trapped in their vehicle by floodwaters during flash floods in Qassim . This successful operation underscores the high level of preparedness of the security forces in handling emergencies. Simultaneously, the Directorate announced that strict penalties will be imposed on the driver for the blatant violation of attempting to cross flooded wadis, thereby endangering lives and property.

Climate change and the history of valley flow in the Kingdom

Various regions of Saudi Arabia, including the Qassim region, experience seasonal weather fluctuations that lead to heavy rainfall and flash floods. Historically, these rains have been a source of blessing and contribute to replenishing groundwater reserves. However, global climate change in recent years has led to increased rainfall intensity over short periods, resulting in flash floods. Relevant authorities have been studying these phenomena and developing infrastructure, in addition to launching ongoing awareness campaigns to warn citizens and residents of the dangers of being in valleys and waterways during the rainy season, in order to prevent the recurrence of tragic incidents that can result from underestimating the power of nature.

The deterrent effect of implementing regulations in the Qassim floods incidents

The decisive handling of the recent incident and the imposition of penalties on the offending driver not only impacts the individual case but also carries significant preventative dimensions at both the local and regional levels. Locally, this action reinforces the principle of "safety first" and fosters public awareness of the dangers of ignoring official warnings, thereby reducing the incidence of similar accidents in the future and alleviating the burden on rescue and emergency teams. Regionally, the Kingdom presents a model to be emulated in managing crises and natural disasters by combining proactive awareness campaigns with strict law enforcement, thereby enhancing public safety indicators and protecting the nation's human and material resources.

Expert warnings and safe driving guidelines

In a related context, Engineer Mohammed Darwish Zamzami, an occupational safety and health consultant and faculty member at the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Institute for Hajj and Umrah Research, warned of the serious risks posed by heavy rainfall and flash floods. He urged citizens and residents to follow the instructions of the relevant authorities and strictly adhere to safety guidelines on roads and in public places to protect lives and property. Engineer Zamzami explained that driving during rainfall requires extra caution, emphasizing the importance of significantly reducing speed, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, and avoiding low-lying areas and roads completely submerged in water. He concluded by stressing that recklessness or haste in such harsh weather conditions could lead to tragic and disastrous consequences.
