Red Crescent efforts during Hajj season to provide smart emergency care

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continuously strives to dedicate all its resources to serving the pilgrims. In this context, the efforts of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority during this year's Hajj season stand out through the development of its health and ambulance services. The Authority has been keen to enhance the presence of modern technologies by launching smart, environmentally friendly, electric-powered, and highly mobile ambulance vehicles. This advanced system is designed for rapid access to emergency cases within confined and crowded areas, effectively contributing to increased field response efficiency and the provision of the highest standards of healthcare to pilgrims. This step is part of an integrated operational system that relies on innovation to facilitate the movement of ambulance teams in the holy sites and high-traffic areas.
A distinguished history of healthcare for pilgrims
These developments were not a sudden occurrence, but rather the culmination of a long history of dedication and care. Since the Kingdom's founding, the wise leadership has placed the health and safety of pilgrims at the forefront of its priorities. Ambulance and emergency services have gradually evolved over the decades, transforming from traditional ambulances and simple medical tents into a comprehensive healthcare system that ranks among the best globally in the field of mass gathering medicine. The Saudi Red Crescent Authority plays a pivotal role in this historic development, having accumulated extensive experience in managing millions of pilgrims within a limited geographical area and short timeframe, making it an internationally recognized model for emergency and health crisis management.
“Rafida Cart”... A unique innovation to enhance the Red Crescent’s efforts during the Hajj season
In its ongoing pursuit of innovation, the Authority's Evening Operations Team Leader, Salman Al-Ajmi, explained that the "Rufaidah Cart" is one of the most prominent modern technologies introduced for the first time to serve pilgrims during this year's Hajj. This cart represents one of the innovative approaches to enhancing smart ambulance access in high-density areas. It has been equipped according to the nature of field operations to support rapid response to those in need of assistance. Its effectiveness is underscored by its significant success during the Umrah season last Ramadan, where it directly contributed to support and transportation operations in the confined spaces of the Grand Mosque and the surrounding central area. This success prompted the Authority to adopt and implement it more broadly in the Holy Sites.
A massive fleet of 3,000 vehicles to ensure rapid response
To ensure comprehensive coverage, Dr. Ahmed Bafaqih, head of the support team at the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, confirmed that the Authority's deployment of over 3,000 vehicles is part of its integrated preparations to serve pilgrims. He noted that the latest vehicles to enter service are air-conditioned golf carts, which boast three key advantages: first, their compact size allows them to access tight spaces, thus accelerating response times; second, they are environmentally friendly and fully electric; and third, they are equipped with a powerful cooling system in the rear cabin, providing a comfortable environment for the injured in hot weather and ensuring the provision of necessary ambulance services in comfort and safety. These carts also enable the transfer of the injured to the nearest ambulance center or to the nearest designated air ambulance landing pad for rapid transport to specialized hospitals.
Dimensions and effects of developing the ambulance system
The continuous modernization of emergency medical services is of paramount importance and has positive impacts that extend far beyond the local level. Locally, this development reflects the Kingdom's commitment to achieving the goals of Vision 2030 in improving quality of life and providing world-class healthcare. Regionally and internationally, this advanced level of preparedness sends a reassuring message to millions of Muslims worldwide that pilgrims are in safe hands. It also reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leading global authority in crowd management and the provision of medical care in large gatherings, enabling other countries and organizations to benefit from Saudi Arabia's unique experience in addressing complex health challenges.
