Saudi participation in the United Nations Forestry Forum in New York

The 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, with active participation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom was represented at the opening session by its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil. This participation underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to engaging in international forums concerned with the environment and supporting global efforts aimed at preserving vegetation and addressing the growing climate challenges threatening the planet.
Objectives of the current session of the United Nations Forum on Forests
This year's forum will discuss a range of key themes, foremost among them ways to enhance the sustainable management of forests worldwide and highlight their vital and pivotal role in supporting and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, participants will focus on monitoring and evaluating progress in implementing the United Nations Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030. The sessions will see broad participation from member states, numerous international organizations, and stakeholders in environmental and development affairs, reflecting the global consensus on the need for concerted efforts to protect natural resources.
The historical context of international efforts to protect forests
Systematic international attention to forest issues dates back decades, as the international community recognized early on the threat to global vegetation cover posed by deforestation and climate change. In this context, the Forum was established in 2000 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as a high-level intergovernmental body. Its primary objective was to promote the management, conservation, and sustainable development of all types of forests, and to foster long-term political commitment to this cause. Since then, the Forum has become the leading global platform bringing together policymakers and experts to exchange views and formulate policies that ensure the survival of these vital resources for future generations, especially given the increasing rates of desertification and biodiversity loss worldwide.
The strategic importance and expected impact of the event globally and regionally
The outcomes of this international event are of paramount importance on various levels. Internationally, forests are the lungs of the planet, playing a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change by absorbing enormous quantities of carbon emissions. Regionally and locally, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's participation reflects its deep commitment to environmental sustainability, which aligns closely with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. This commitment has been clearly demonstrated through the launch of pioneering national and regional initiatives, such as the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, which aim to plant billions of trees and restore millions of hectares of degraded land. The recommendations and resolutions that will emerge from this session will positively influence the national environmental policies of participating countries, enhancing their ability to address shared environmental challenges and supporting the transition to a green and sustainable economy that ensures the well-being of societies and the stability of ecosystems.
