According to a recent international report published on Tuesday, the encroachment of criminal groups into protected areas is fueling violence and hindering conservation efforts in the world's largest tropical rainforest. This dangerous shift portends an environmental and security catastrophe that extends far beyond the continent.
The historical roots of gang infiltration in the Amazon rainforest
Historically, the region has suffered from persistent encroachments such as illegal logging and unregulated agricultural expansion. However, recent decades have witnessed a radical shift; the threats are no longer limited to individual acts but have extended to transnational criminal networks.
