Iran demands Trump apologize for the war on Iran and seek US assurances

In a dangerous escalation of current events, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi demanded that US President Donald Trump issue a formal apology for the war on Iran, stressing that Washington must bear responsibility for the recent military operations and the resulting destruction. These fiery statements come at a time of unprecedented tension in the region, amidst US assurances that it has no intention of targeting energy infrastructure, in an attempt to calm global market fears.

Demands for an apology and rejection of foreign interference

Iraqi told NBC that the US president should "apologize to the people of the region and the Iranian people for the killings and destruction they have committed against us." The minister emphasized that Tehran will not allow any foreign party to interfere in its internal affairs, particularly regarding the highly sensitive issue of choosing a successor to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Araghchi pointed out that the Supreme Leader was killed on the first day of the joint US-Israeli attacks on February 28, in response to Trump’s statements in which he hinted at his desire to contribute to the selection of the next Iranian leadership, which Tehran considered a crossing of red lines and a violation of its national sovereignty.

The roots of the conflict and escalating tension

This current escalation cannot be separated from the complex historical context of US-Iranian relations. For decades, the relationship between the two countries has been characterized by mutual distrust, exacerbated by the US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and the imposition of crippling economic sanctions. Talk of war with Iran today evokes memories of years of proxy wars and diplomatic tensions that have transformed the Middle East into an open battleground, where Tehran seeks to maintain its regional influence in the face of persistent Western pressure.

Missile capabilities and self-defense

In a related development, the Iranian Foreign Minister downplayed concerns about the threat to US territory, asserting that his country's missiles are incapable of reaching the United States. Explaining his country's defensive posture, he stated, "The Americans started this war against us and attacked us; we are defending ourselves. Therefore, it is clear that our missiles cannot reach American soil," indicating that Iran's response is focused on regional objectives and defending its sovereignty.

The repercussions of the war on Iran and its global impact

This conflict raises widespread concerns that extend beyond regional boundaries to the entire international community. Any full-scale escalation under the guise of war with Iran could destabilize vital international shipping lanes, threatening global supply chains. Furthermore, the involvement of international and regional powers in this conflict could reshape the geopolitical landscape of the region, posing significant challenges to the global economy, particularly regarding energy prices and the flow of oil and gas from the Gulf region.

US assurances regarding infrastructure

On the other hand, in an attempt to manage the conflict, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized that the United States does not intend to target Iranian energy infrastructure as part of a joint attack with Israel. In an interview with CNN, he explained that any disruptions to oil and gas flows would last, "at worst, only a few weeks, not months.".

This statement comes as four oil depots and a logistics site were bombed by Israel on Saturday in and around Tehran, causing massive fires, reflecting the delicate situation and the sensitivity of targeting energy facilities in light of this escalating conflict.
