Minister of Education Yousef Al-Bunyan inaugurated a pioneering development initiative, the "Humanizing Schools" initiative in Makkah , in the presence of Engineer Saleh Al-Rasheed, CEO of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites, and Abdullah Al-Ghannam, Director General of Education in the Makkah Region. This initiative represents a unique pilot project aimed at enhancing sustainability and improving the quality of life within and around educational environments, closely aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which places people and the environment at the heart of its development priorities.
Urban and educational transformation: The roots of development
This step comes as an extension of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to develop the infrastructure of the education sector. Historically, schools were built with high concrete walls that isolated the school environment from its surrounding community, which was in line with urban planning standards in past decades. With the development of modern educational and urban planning concepts, the urgent need arose to integrate schools into the fabric of residential neighborhoods. Hence came the idea of transforming educational buildings from mere enclosed facilities into vibrant community centers that breathe and interact with their surroundings, reflecting a radical shift in the design philosophy of government and educational buildings in the Kingdom to be more open and welcoming.

The initiative primarily aims to bring about a radical transformation in the exterior facades of educational buildings to align with the rich architectural heritage of Mecca. The development work includes a significant and bold step: removing traditional school walls and replacing them with contemporary designs that enhance the urban landscape. The Director General of Education in the Makkah Region, Abdullah Al-Ghannam, explained that this project is the fruit of an effective and integrated partnership between the Ministry of Education, represented by the General Directorate of Education in the region, and the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites. He indicated that the inauguration ceremony included a detailed presentation of the project's field components, which extend over an area exceeding 3,100 square meters of green spaces, in addition to pedestrian walkways nearly 1,000 meters long. Al-Ghannam pointed out that this model represents only the first phase of a comprehensive development plan targeting a number of schools located on the main streets of the Holy City, reflecting the great importance placed on developing educational facilities according to the highest modern standards that take into account aesthetic and human considerations.
