In a move reflecting social cohesion and national responsibility, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced record-breaking achievements in community service, highlighting the significant role of volunteer work in the municipal and housing sectors during the holy month of Ramadan. The Ministry successfully implemented over 278,627 volunteer hours, with the active participation of more than 23,000 volunteers of all ages. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at supporting the sector's work and services across all regions of the Kingdom, reflecting the deeply rooted spirit of giving within Saudi society.
Historical roots and Vision 2030 in supporting volunteering
Humanitarian and volunteer work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia carries a deep historical and cultural legacy, rooted in Islamic values and authentic Arab traditions that encourage solidarity and cooperation, especially during blessed seasons such as Ramadan. In the modern era, this concept has acquired a comprehensive institutional and organizational dimension thanks to Saudi Vision 2030, which has set among its strategic goals the goal of reaching one million volunteers annually. This broader context explains the significant momentum witnessed in government initiatives today, as volunteering has transformed from mere individual efforts into organized, institutional work that contributes to comprehensive and sustainable development.
The impact of volunteer work in the municipal sector on the urban landscape
efforts in the municipal sector have not been limited Volunteer to theoretical aspects, but have extended to tangible field achievements that have contributed to improving the quality of life. These initiatives have included conducting more than 11,000 inspection tours to ensure compliance with municipal regulations, in addition to removing more than 6,000 unsightly and haphazard stickers from public spaces. Furthermore, volunteers have participated in improving and beautifying more than 400 meters of roads and sidewalks, and have actively contributed to the maintenance and enhancement of parks and public facilities. These field efforts play a pivotal role in enhancing the urban landscape and improving the quality of the urban environment in Saudi cities, making them more sustainable and attractive.
Community awareness programs and humanitarian initiatives
Alongside its fieldwork, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing placed great emphasis on the educational aspect. Initiatives included implementing a range of awareness and community programs that benefited more than 62,000 people. These programs focused on promoting a culture of preserving public property and facilities, and instilling civic responsibility among community members. The initiatives also addressed the humanitarian aspect of Ramadan, distributing more than 20,000 iftar meals during the holy month, thus reinforcing the values of compassion and social solidarity.
The economic importance and overall impact of the initiatives
The importance of these initiatives extends beyond the social and environmental dimensions to include a tangible economic impact. The Ministry clarified that these efforts contributed to achieving an economic return from financial contributions exceeding 17,223,500 Saudi Riyals. This figure clearly reflects the high level of community engagement with volunteer initiatives and their effective role in supporting the efforts of the government sector.
Locally, these efforts contribute to building a vibrant and cohesive society. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom presents a model to be emulated in how to invest in and direct human resources towards serving development goals, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly with regard to building sustainable cities and local communities. The Ministry concludes its report by emphasizing that this voluntary effort embodies the integration of efforts between government entities and the community, and reflects a growing awareness of the importance of civic participation in supporting municipal services and enhancing quality of life.
