SDAIA promotes digital transformation through the Makkah Route Initiative in Istanbul

The Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has played a significant role in enhancing digital transformation to better serve pilgrims by activating the Makkah Route Initiative at the initiative's terminal in Istanbul International Airport, Turkey. This initiative utilizes an integrated technological system that relies on data integration and streamlined procedures. The system allows pilgrims to complete all necessary procedures in their departure country through a unified digital pathway, including personal data verification, biometric data collection, and electronic issuance of Hajj permits. This significantly improves efficiency and reduces waiting times before arrival in the Holy Land.

Historical roots and continuous development in serving the guests of God

Caring for pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah is one of the most important pillars upon which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been founded. With the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, the Guests of God Service Program emerged as one of the most important executive programs of the Vision, aiming to bring about a qualitative leap in the Hajj and Umrah experience. In this context, the initiative was first launched in 1438 AH (2017 CE), marking a significant milestone in the history of services provided to pilgrims. Since its inception, the initiative has successfully served more than 1,254,994 pilgrims, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to harnessing the latest technologies to facilitate the performance of the rituals. The Ministry of Interior is implementing this initiative in its eighth year in close cooperation with several government entities, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Hajj and Umrah, and Media, in addition to the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the General Authority for Endowments, and the General Directorate of Passports, in conjunction with its digital partner, stc Group.

The regional and international impact of the success of the Makkah Route Initiative

extends of the Makkah Route Initiative beyond streamlining procedures locally, leaving a broad and positive mark on both regional and international levels. By implementing this initiative in multiple Islamic countries, the Kingdom is setting a global benchmark for crowd management and the use of advanced technology in the religious travel and tourism sector. Internationally, these steps reinforce the Kingdom's position as a leader in digital transformation and artificial intelligence, highlighting its ability to export innovative technological solutions that meet the highest global standards for information security and traveler comfort, thus showcasing the Kingdom's remarkable technological advancements to the world.

Information accuracy and the use of artificial intelligence

SDAIA is working diligently to develop and operate advanced technological systems, connecting all participating entities within a unified digital environment. This technological integration ensures the accuracy of information, streamlines procedures, and supports immediate and direct decision-making. This technological integration enables unprecedented smart services, most notably the baggage coding system and its electronic link to pilgrims' accommodations. This service allows pilgrims' luggage to be transported directly from the arrival airport to their hotels without the need to wait for collection in the arrival halls, providing significant convenience after long journeys. This technological integration represents a practical model for data and artificial intelligence applications in serving the pilgrims, by providing high-quality services befitting the Kingdom's stature and its constant commitment to facilitating the Hajj pilgrimage.
