1000 volunteer opportunities in Riyadh as part of the Saudi Green Initiative

In a pioneering step reflecting the national commitment to environmental protection, the Director General of Education in the Riyadh region, Dr. Nayef bin Abed Al-Zare, launched 1,000 new volunteer opportunities in strategic partnership with the Riyadh Municipality. This significant initiative coincides with the celebration of Saudi Green, underscoring the pivotal role of educational institutions in instilling the values of volunteerism and social responsibility in future generations.
The launch of these volunteer opportunities aims to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection, support large-scale afforestation projects, and actively contribute to reducing carbon emissions. These efforts are part of a sustainable approach that seeks to create a tangible environmental and social impact, aligning with broader national goals for achieving environmental sustainability and improving the quality of life in the capital.
Riyadh Education's efforts in supporting the Saudi Green Initiative
During the official launch ceremony for these volunteer opportunities, Dr. Nayef Al-Zarea explained that the Riyadh Education Department is proud of its active participation in implementing the tree-planting plan. This plan targets a large number of neighborhoods in Riyadh, as well as schools and their affiliated educational facilities, making the school environment a true starting point for positive change.
Al-Zare’ explained that the field engagement was exceptional, with more than 3,400 individual and participatory activities implemented in schools. These activities directly contribute to achieving the objectives of the “Green Riyadh” project, one of the world’s largest urban afforestation projects, which aims to increase per capita green space and improve the urban landscape.
The overall context for launching the Kingdom's environmental vision
To understand the profound implications of these steps, it is essential to consider the broader context in which they were initiated. In 2021, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, announced the launch of this ambitious environmental project to address the challenges of climate change. The Kingdom set its sights on planting 10 billion trees across the country and rehabilitating 40 million hectares of degraded land, thereby reshaping the environmental landscape of the entire region.
This historic transformation was not merely a response to local challenges, but rather came as part of the Kingdom’s commitment to international environmental agreements, and its relentless pursuit of reducing dependence on traditional fuels and moving towards renewable and clean energy sources, making these voluntary initiatives in Riyadh part of a comprehensive national movement.
Expected impact at the local, regional, and international levels
These volunteer and environmental efforts are of paramount importance and have an impact across multiple levels. Locally, increasing green spaces contributes to lowering temperatures in the capital, Riyadh, and improving air quality, which positively impacts public health and helps achieve the goals of the Quality of Life Program within Saudi Vision 2030.
Regionally, the Kingdom is leading parallel efforts through the Green Middle East Initiative, setting an example for neighboring countries in integrating educational and community institutions into environmental action. Internationally, these steps reinforce the Kingdom's position as a leader in combating climate change and underscore its commitment to reducing carbon emissions to achieve net-zero carbon neutrality by 2060, making every tree planted and every volunteer opportunity a step towards a more sustainable global future.
