Dust storm risks: Health warnings and groups most vulnerable

The Saudi Ministry of Health issued an urgent warning to citizens and residents, especially those with allergies and respiratory conditions, about the dangers of dust storms affecting some regions during the summer. The Ministry explained that these dust storms cause serious damage to public health, particularly to the lungs, due to poor air quality and the inhalation of airborne particles.

A recurring environmental phenomenon in the Arabian Peninsula

Dust and sandstorms are a common weather phenomenon in the Arabian Peninsula and arid regions, where surface winds stir up dust during the transitional seasons and summer. Historically, the region has faced these environmental challenges, which directly impact air quality and daily life. With global climate change and increasing desertification rates, these storms have become more frequent and intense, necessitating ongoing preventative measures to protect public health and mitigate the resulting economic and health losses.

Health and economic impacts of dust storms

Dust storms not only have an environmental impact but also place a significant burden on the healthcare sector, both locally and regionally. Locally, hospital emergency rooms in the Kingdom experience a noticeable increase in respiratory patients during these periods. Regionally and internationally, these storms disrupt air and land transportation and increase healthcare costs, prompting international organizations like the World Health Organization to emphasize the need for strategies to address the negative effects of dust storms on communities.

The most significant risks of dust storms to human health

The Ministry of Health indicated that dust contains fine particles, microbes, and pollen grains that vary in size and impact. The main health risks include:

  • Severe irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and upper respiratory tract.
  • Persistent coughing, wheezing when breathing, and severe difficulty in the airway.
  • The health condition of patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, and pulmonary obstruction worsens.
  • Increased likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease as a result of inhaling very fine particles that penetrate the lungs.
  • The long-term negative impact and reduction of a person's lifespan are a result of continuous exposure to environmental pollutants.

Groups most susceptible to dust complications

Health authorities have identified four main categories of people who should exercise extreme caution and avoid direct exposure to dusty conditions:

  • Children and infants, due to the incomplete development of their respiratory system and the narrowness of their airways.
  • Older adults who may suffer from a weakened immune system or a decline in normal lung function.
  • Those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases, heart disease, and diabetes.
  • People whose work requires them to be outdoors for long periods.

Prevention methods and important medical guidelines

To prevent health problems associated with dust storms, the Ministry of Health advises following these guidelines:

  • Close doors and windows in homes tightly to prevent fine dust from entering.
  • Avoid going outdoors except when absolutely necessary during periods of dust-laden wind activity.
  • Wear medical masks or masks with high air filtration (such as N95) and change them regularly when you have to go out.
  • For asthma patients, the rescue asthma inhaler (bronchodilator) should be carried at all times, the preventative inhaler should be used, and the nearest emergency center should be visited immediately if there is no response to treatment and the respiratory crisis worsens.
