Haramain High-Speed Railway: 2.21 million seats to serve pilgrims to the House of God

As part of the ongoing efforts of the wise leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to serve the pilgrims, the Saudi Railways Company (SAR) announced a significant strategic step: increasing the operational capacity of the Haramain High-Speed Railway during the Hajj season to over 2.21 million seats. This initiative reflects the continued expansion to meet the growing demand for transportation between the two holy cities of Mecca and Medina, and to provide the highest levels of comfort and safety for pilgrims arriving from all corners of the earth.

A qualitative leap in the history of transportation in Mecca and Medina

The railway project between Mecca and Medina is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Middle East. Since its official launch in 2018, the project has revolutionized the concept of travel within the Kingdom. Historically, the journey for pilgrims between the two holy cities took many hours by bus and car, causing significant hardship for the pilgrims, in addition to crippling traffic congestion during peak seasons. With the launch of this mega-project, the journey time has been reduced to approximately two hours, providing a safe, fast, and comfortable alternative that aligns with global technological advancements in the public transportation sector.

Haramain High-Speed Railway ready for Hajj season

The announced figures confirm the complete readiness and full preparedness to provide highly efficient transportation services. This year's Hajj season's operational capacity represents an increase of over 210,000 seats compared to last year. The operation is scheduled to include 5,308 flights during the season, an increase of approximately 11%, which will enhance traffic flow and provide pilgrims with more options. During peak times, the number of daily flights will exceed 142, contributing to smoother operations and reduced waiting times. The actual operational phase begins with the departure of the first Hajj flights on Tuesday, May 5th, from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah to Makkah.

Advanced routes and stations to serve pilgrims

The fleet comprises 35 trains, each with a capacity of 417 seats. Operating on a 453-kilometer route, it is one of the ten fastest passenger trains in the world, reaching speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. The route connects five main stations: Mecca, Medina, Jeddah (Sulaimaniyah), King Abdullah Economic City, and King Abdulaziz International Airport, facilitating the smooth and comfortable travel of pilgrims.

Economic and environmental impact and future prospects

The importance of this vital project extends beyond simply facilitating transportation; it encompasses far-reaching positive impacts at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, the project contributes to alleviating the immense pressure on highway networks, thereby reducing traffic accidents and infrastructure maintenance costs. Environmentally, the train is completely carbon-neutral, making it an eco-friendly option that supports Saudi Arabia's green initiatives. Internationally, providing a seamless and advanced travel experience reflects the Kingdom's positive image and its exceptional ability to efficiently and effectively manage millions of pilgrims. These rapid steps are an extension of SAR's pivotal role in supporting the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and bolstering Saudi Vision 2030 by enhancing the quality of services provided to pilgrims, improving their mobility experience, and maximizing the efficiency of their spiritual journey from arrival until the completion of their rituals with ease and peace of mind.
