With a legacy spanning over 100 years, the Tumair Observatory prepares to welcome those observing the crescent moon for Eid al-Fitr

The crescent sighting observatory in Tamir Governorate is preparing today to receive observers forthe sighting of the crescent moon of Shawwal, heralding the arrival of Eid al-Fitr.
This comes amidst comprehensive preparations and on-site arrangements that ensure accurate observation and easy access to the site. The observatory was inaugurated in its new form by His Highness the Mayor of Riyadh during the month of Sha'ban, as part of the Riyadh Municipality's efforts to develop and enhance the readiness of crescent sighting sites, thereby contributing to improved fieldwork and providing a suitable environment for observers and those interested in the matter.

Tamir has been famous for observing the new moon for more than 100 years, as observers used to climb to the highlands at the beginning of the lunar months to observe the crescent with the naked eye, in a tradition passed down by the locals through generations.

Development stages

In 1436 AH, the first observatory in the city was established under the supervision of the Tamir, to support observation efforts and organize the work of those searching for the new moon.
The year 1447 AH witnessed a significant leap forward with the development of the observatory and the establishment of a modern, fully equipped facility, making it an advanced center for lunar observation and promoting public awareness of astronomy.

Site advantages

The Tumair Observatory is distinguished by several features that have made it one of the most prominent observation sites in the Kingdom, including:

  • Its location is approximately 678 meters above sea level.
  • Its desert geography provides a wide horizon and visual clarity suitable for observation.
  • A quiet environment with minimal light and dust effects, which enhances visual acuity.
  • It provides modern facilities, equipment, and support services to assist those who are seeing.

These efforts come within the framework of the Riyadh Region Municipality’s support for community and scientific initiatives, and the promotion of the culture of sighting the crescent moon according to Sharia and scientific principles, in line with the objectives of developing infrastructure and services in the region.
