Wakaa Center's efforts to boost agricultural production with 10 million organisms

In a strategic move aimed at protecting the environment and developing the agricultural sector, the Weqaa Center an intensive campaign of biological control applications in three key regions of Saudi Arabia. These exceptional efforts resulted in the release of more than 10 million beneficial organisms, in a serious endeavor to reduce reliance on harmful chemical pesticides and promote agricultural sustainability, a cornerstone of the Kingdom's future vision.
The shift towards sustainable agriculture and food security
Historically, the global agricultural sector has relied heavily on chemical pesticides for pest control, leading to accumulated environmental and health challenges that have impacted soil and water quality. With growing environmental awareness, the urgent need to shift towards safer methods has become apparent. In this context, the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia align with global trends and its Vision 2030, which prioritizes food security and environmental protection. The use of natural biological control agents represents a return to natural ecological balance, harnessing living organisms to control agricultural pests without harming natural resources, thus paving the way for a green and sustainable agricultural renaissance.
Details of field operations for integrated management programs
Official reports revealed that the center's field teams targeted 49 farms in recent days, implementing six strategic Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. These meticulous field operations covered a vast area of 111.17 hectares. The initiative involved releasing 10,694,500 beneficial organisms into the targeted agricultural environments. To ensure the success of these biological solutions, 232 agricultural fields were targeted using 1,257 packages containing eight different types of beneficial organisms, reflecting precise scientific planning to guarantee the effective integration of biological pest control solutions.
Expected impact and role of the Wakaa Center in leading the sector
This event is of paramount importance and has a positive impact on several levels. Locally, the Waqaa Center to raising the quality and safety of national products, thereby enhancing consumer confidence and supporting farmers economically by reducing pesticide costs. Regionally, this initiative solidifies the Kingdom's position as a leader in adopting environmentally friendly agricultural practices in the Middle East, in line with the Saudi Green Initiative. Internationally, this achievement aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
To reinforce these results and ensure their sustainability, the center conducted 44 monitoring visits by specialists to closely track program implementation and measure their direct impact in the field. The report also highlighted a proactive tactical step: the release of 100 bumblebee colonies in agricultural areas to support natural pollination and enhance production efficiency. These comprehensive initiatives are part of ongoing support for farmers, aimed at establishing sustainable practices and ensuring a secure and prosperous agricultural future for generations to come.
