US warns of strikes on infrastructure if no agreement is reached between the US and Iran

The United States issued a stern warning to Tehran, threatening military strikes against Iranian infrastructure and energy facilities if the Iranian leadership continues to refuse to reach an agreement with the US to end the current crisis. This threat came from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who affirmed that Washington would not hesitate to use decisive military force to protect its interests and those of its allies in the region, indicating that diplomatic options for Tehran are dwindling.

Details of the naval blockade and the direct military threat

At a press conference held at the Pentagon, the US Secretary of Defense explained that the US-imposed blockade on Iranian ports, which has already been implemented, will continue "as long as necessary" to pressure Tehran. He added, in a decisive tone, "If Iran chooses the wrong path, it will face a crippling blockade, and bombs will rain down on its infrastructure and vital energy facilities.".

For his part, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Keane, confirmed at the same conference that the naval blockade was comprehensive and strict, stating that “the blockade includes all ships traveling to and from Iranian ports, regardless of their nationality or flag.” Keane emphasized the seriousness of the US in implementing these measures, saying, “If you do not comply with this blockade, we will use military force to enforce it.”.

Pakistani mediation efforts to broker an agreement between the US and Iran

Amid these escalating US threats, regional diplomatic efforts continue to try to defuse the crisis. In this context, Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir is continuing his official visit to the Iranian capital, Tehran, where he met with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. This visit is part of Islamabad's ongoing mediation efforts to bridge the gap and facilitate indirect talks between Tehran and Washington, aiming to reach an agreement between the US and Iran that would avert a full-scale military confrontation in the region, which could have dire consequences for everyone.

The historical roots of the crisis and its regional and international repercussions

These rapid developments are an extension of decades of geopolitical tension and conflict between Washington and Tehran, which escalated significantly after the United States withdrew from the nuclear agreement and reimposed stringent economic sanctions. Under the administration of current US President Donald Trump, Washington adopted a “maximum pressure” strategy to undermine Iranian regional influence and prevent Tehran from developing its nuclear and missile capabilities.

Observers and political analysts believe that any direct military escalation or targeting of Iranian infrastructure will not only have domestic repercussions but will also extend to the regional and international levels. Regionally, such a clash could ignite multiple fronts in the Middle East due to the complex web of alliances. Internationally, threatening maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and targeting Iranian energy facilities would inevitably lead to a massive surge in global oil prices, threatening the stability of the global economy and vital supply chains.
