SDAIA and the World Bank strengthen AI governance

A high-level international workshop on “AI Governance and International Cooperation” concluded in Washington, D.C. This prominent event was organized by the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) in strategic partnership with the World Bank Group, and took place from April 6 to 10. It brought together leading international experts and representatives from global organizations, as well as several prominent government entities.
The global context and the evolving need for AI governance
The world has witnessed an unprecedented technological boom over the past decade, with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies becoming a key driver of economic growth and innovation across various sectors. With this rapid development, the need has become urgent to establish regulatory and legislative frameworks that ensure the safe and ethical use of these technologies. Historically, major countries and organizations have begun to realize that leaving this technology unregulated could lead to risks related to data privacy and information security. In this context, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has emerged as a proactive and influential force since the establishment of the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), taking the lead in efforts to lay a solid foundation for directing these technologies to serve humanity, as clearly demonstrated by the organization of this international workshop.
In-depth discussions to build a secure digital system
Over five consecutive days, the workshop featured in-depth discussions and intensive dialogue sessions addressing leading global practices in artificial intelligence governance. Participants focused on mechanisms for developing regulatory and legislative frameworks that promote the responsible use of modern technologies. The sessions also aimed to contribute to building a secure and reliable digital ecosystem that supports sustainable development goals. The workshop's work focused particularly on strengthening international cooperation and the exchange of expertise between countries and organizations, aligning national policies with global frameworks, and anticipating future challenges related to the rapid development of data and advanced technologies.
Review of the pioneering Saudi model
The workshop included the “Saudi Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence Day” event, organized by SDAIA in collaboration with the Digital Government Authority. This event showcased the Kingdom’s pioneering national model for adopting advanced technologies and highlighted key national initiatives and inspiring success stories in data utilization. The presentation reflected the Kingdom’s significant and tangible progress in this vital field, making it a model to be emulated regionally and internationally.
Strategic dimensions and impact of AI governance locally and internationally
This workshop is of paramount importance given its anticipated impact on several levels. Locally, these efforts support the Kingdom's endeavors to diversify the national economy and build an advanced knowledge-based society, perfectly aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. Regionally, the Kingdom's leadership in such dialogues reinforces its position as a regional hub for technology and innovation in the Middle East. Internationally, the workshop underscores the importance of unifying global efforts to build effective and inclusive governance frameworks and strengthen strategic partnerships that support innovation and ensure the ethical and responsible use of technologies. This event is an extension of the strategic partnership between SDAIA and the World Bank Group, and embodies the Kingdom's role in leading the international dialogue on the future of technology, thus reinforcing its position as a global leader in shaping a secure and prosperous digital future for all.
