Developing Maritime Transport and Logistics: A Partnership Between Jeddah University and Ports

Jeddah University welcomed a high-level delegation from the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), headed by Engineer Sulaiman Al-Mazrou, on an official visit that culminated in the signing of a strategic memorandum of understanding aimed at developing maritime transport and logistics in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The delegation was received by the University President, Professor Obaid Al-Mudhaffar, along with deans of colleges and academic leaders. An extensive meeting was held to discuss ways to integrate the academic system with the ports sector and align educational outcomes with the growing demands of the labor market.
Promising prospects for training national cadres in the development of maritime transport and logistics
This agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for cooperation in education, training, consulting, research, and innovation. The memorandum stipulates the enhancement of scientific and practical expertise exchange and the conduct of joint studies that contribute to improving institutional performance and addressing developmental challenges. Both parties also focused on launching high-quality programs and initiatives that serve the maritime sector, including offering specialized academic programs such as diplomas and executive master's degrees in port and maritime management, and expanding cooperative training opportunities for university students to cultivate a new generation capable of leading this vital sector.
Historical context and the Kingdom's ambitious Vision 2030
The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) was established to oversee the regulation and management of Saudi ports, which constitute the Kingdom's main artery of trade. With the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, the wise leadership set a strategic goal of transforming the Kingdom into a global logistics hub connecting three continents (Asia, Africa, and Europe). The partnership between Jeddah University and Mawani is a natural and complementary step to previous efforts by educational and service institutions to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, building upon the historical legacy of Jeddah Islamic Port as a major trade gateway on the Red Sea coast.
Expected impact of the partnership locally and internationally
Locally, this partnership will contribute to providing highly qualified national talent to meet the needs of logistics and port companies, reducing reliance on foreign personnel and supporting localization. Regionally and internationally, enhancing research and innovation capabilities in the ports sector will contribute to raising the operational efficiency of Saudi ports, boosting their global competitiveness and attracting more foreign investment and major shipping lines. Integrating modern technologies and logistics engineering into the curricula of Jeddah University will position the Kingdom as a leading regional hub for maritime innovation and sustainable logistics services.
