Trump's new conditions to avoid escalation with Iran in the region

US President Donald Trump stated that he is not seeking a new war, but at the same time expects a decisive and appropriate response within a few days to ensure that escalation with Iran is avoided. In remarks reported by various media outlets, including Al Arabiya via its X platform, Trump affirmed that his administration is prepared to act decisively if it does not receive the desired response. He explained that Tehran is currently suffering the consequences of its policies, noting that the sanctions and economic embargo imposed on it were, in his words, "fantastic and excellent." He emphasized that no sanctions will be eased before the formal signing of a comprehensive and credible agreement.
The historical context of the escalation with Iran
To understand the roots of this tension, one must return to the historical context of relations between Washington and Tehran, which have witnessed sharp turns in recent years. In 2018, the US administration withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, subsequently launching a campaign of maximum pressure. This campaign relied on imposing harsh economic sanctions targeting Iran's oil and banking sectors, crippling large parts of the Iranian economy. Today, the issue of escalating tensions with Iran has resurfaced as the US administration attempts to impose new conditions to ensure that Tehran does not acquire nuclear weapons and to curtail its regional influence and ballistic missile program.
The Iranian position: Warnings of hidden American intentions
On the other hand, Tehran is responding to these statements with extreme caution and counter-accusations. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the United States is actively seeking to initiate a new war, accusing Washington of attempting to force Tehran to surrender in the confrontation that escalated months ago. Ghalibaf, who led his country's delegation in previous talks held in Islamabad last month, added that American actions, both overt and covert, prove that Washington has not abandoned its military objectives despite employing economic and political pressure.
In an audio message broadcast by Iranian media, Qalibaf stressed that closely monitoring the situation in the United States reinforces the possibility that the American administration still hopes for the surrender of the Iranian nation, which the Iranian leadership categorically rejects, affirming its readiness to defend its sovereignty and interests.
Strategic importance and impact of the event regionally and internationally
These developments are of paramount importance, extending beyond the borders of the two countries to encompass the entire regional and international landscape. Regionally, any US-Iranian tension raises serious concerns about the security of navigation in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's energy supplies pass. Any military confrontation could lead to widespread disruptions in global oil markets, negatively impacting the international economy.
On the international level, the success or failure of reaching a new agreement will determine the shape of geopolitical alliances in the coming period. Major powers are closely monitoring the situation, as stability in the Middle East is a cornerstone of international peace and security. Reaching a diplomatic settlement would calm global markets and pave the way for relative stability, while continued threats could push the region toward a dangerous and unpredictable precipice.
