How does the Makkah Route Initiative complete Hajj procedures in 40 seconds?

The Saudi Ministry of Interior, in close collaboration and partnership with the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), has intensified its efforts to facilitate the Hajj pilgrimage by leveraging cutting-edge technologies. In this context, the Makkah Route Initiative as a key strategic project aimed at serving pilgrims. A mobile device utilizing artificial intelligence and advanced digital solutions has been developed to expedite travel procedures for pilgrims. Now in its eighth year, this initiative operates through 17 points of entry across 10 different countries, reflecting the unwavering commitment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's wise leadership to providing the highest quality services to pilgrims performing Hajj.
The roots of digital transformation in serving the pilgrims
This technological advancement was not a sudden occurrence, but rather the culmination of a long history of the Kingdom's exceptional care for the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors. Historically, the Hajj pilgrimage involved considerable hardship in travel and completing paperwork at border crossings. With the launch of Vision 2030, a radical shift towards digitizing government services began, with the introduction of the Guests of God Service Program as one of its executive initiatives. This program, launched in 2017, marked a significant turning point in the history of Hajj, aiming to transfer the inspection and processing of procedures from Saudi airports to the airports of departure countries, thus saving pilgrims hours of waiting upon arrival.
Artificial intelligence technologies in the Makkah Route Initiative
The new mobile device, developed entirely by Saudi nationals, relies on data and artificial intelligence technologies. This device enables relevant authorities to complete procedures for pilgrims, especially the elderly and people with disabilities, in a highly automated and flexible manner. The device captures biometric data, takes a facial image, and reads passport and visa data with exceptional accuracy, all in a record time of no more than 40 seconds per pilgrim. This technological advancement ensures extremely fast document verification, providing a seamless and secure experience for pilgrims from the moment they leave their home countries until they arrive at their accommodations in Mecca and Medina, without the need to wait at Saudi airports.
Strategic dimensions and global impact to facilitate the Hajj journey
This technological achievement holds immense significance that extends far beyond local boundaries, encompassing broad regional and international dimensions. Locally, these swift measures contribute to easing operational pressure on Saudi airports and ports of entry during the Hajj season, thereby enhancing security and organizational efficiency. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's successful implementation of these technologies in 10 different countries reinforces its leading global position in crowd management and the application of artificial intelligence to serve humanity. This close international cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the beneficiary countries reflects the high level of coordination in ensuring the comfort of pilgrims, leaving a profoundly positive impact on millions of Muslims worldwide and underscoring the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to dedicating all its resources to serving Islam and Muslims.
