Food and drug laboratories prepare to ensure the safety of pilgrims

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues its exceptional efforts in serving pilgrims. In this context, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) announced the increased readiness of its food and drug laboratories in preparation for the Hajj season. This step is part of intensive operational plans aimed at supporting the safety of pilgrims and enhancing the efficiency of response to food and drug-related emergencies. This will be achieved by operating the laboratories around the clock and increasing their operational capacity to meet the increased workload during the season, in accordance with the highest international standards.
A historical legacy in serving the guests of God
For decades, since its unification, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has placed the safety of pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah at the forefront of its priorities. Historically, the healthcare and food safety systems in the Holy Sites have undergone radical development, following an upward trajectory that keeps pace with the increasing number of pilgrims year after year. This care has not been limited to providing security alone, but has extended to establishing a robust health and regulatory infrastructure that ensures the Hajj environment is free from epidemics and foodborne illnesses. This long-standing historical legacy is embodied today in the institutional development led by the General Authority for Food Safety to guarantee the highest levels of health safety.
The Authority's laboratories receive and analyze samples from field teams, in addition to conducting urgent laboratory tests for cases related to pilgrim safety. They also support epidemiological investigations and the handling of suspected food poisoning cases. Operational performance indicators demonstrated high efficiency, with 465 requests received, a total of 857 samples collected, and 1,856 tests completed, reflecting the rapid response during the Hajj season.
Advanced technologies within food and drug laboratories
rely Food and drug laboratories on state-of-the-art equipment and advanced technologies to ensure reliable results. These technologies include genomic analysis for identifying pathogens and accurately tracing sources of infection, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) devices for the rapid detection of microbes and pathogens. Additionally, ELISA devices are used to detect toxins and foodborne pathogens with high efficiency and reliability, forming a robust safeguard for the health of pilgrims.
Strategic dimensions and international impact of the season's success
The impact of these stringent regulatory measures extends far beyond the local level, carrying significant regional and international dimensions. The Kingdom's success in managing gatherings of millions of people and ensuring their food and medicine safety reinforces its global standing as a leading model in preventative medicine and health crisis management. Internationally, these measures provide reassurance to Islamic countries sending pilgrims, confirming that their citizens are under the care of a comprehensive healthcare system. Domestically, they reflect the strength of the infrastructure and contribute to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 related to the program for serving the pilgrims.
Accommodating pilgrims and the fast track mechanism
The Authority's laboratories, in cooperation with relevant sectors, participated in conducting specialized studies and research, most notably a study analyzing ready-made meals used to feed pilgrims and assessing their safety. To enhance response times, the Authority has adopted the "Fast Track Mechanism" initiative, which aims to receive and sort samples and begin laboratory analysis within less than an hour of receipt. This procedure contributes to expediting results and supporting preventive measures.
The authority adopts the highest standards of quality and biosafety across all stages of laboratory work, along with analyzing laboratory data to support decision-making in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. These efforts reflect the wise leadership's commitment to harnessing all capabilities to ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims.
