Summer weather in Saudi Arabia: Meteorology clarifies the truth about the early onset of heat

The National Center for Meteorology has put an end to the recent debate surrounding the possibility of an early summer this year. The center's official spokesperson confirmed that there are no scientific or climatological indicators to support this hypothesis. The center explained that summer weather patterns in Saudi Arabia will gradually follow their normal averages, with normal fluctuations in temperature expected during the current transitional period between spring and summer.
Temperature forecasts and summer weather characteristics in Saudi Arabia
The official spokesperson for the Meteorology Department, Hussein Al-Qahtani, explained that current forecasts indicate temperatures will remain below average for two consecutive weeks, starting in late April. Al-Qahtani added that this mild and pleasant weather currently affecting large parts of the Kingdom will be followed by an exceptional week in which temperatures will begin to gradually rise, approaching the usual averages for this time of year in most areas.
Map of expected temperature increases during the summer months
Regarding the seasonal forecast for the hot summer months (June, July, and August), the National Center of Meteorology indicated that temperatures are likely to rise significantly above normal levels across much of the country. The spokesperson explained that this expected increase will range between one and two degrees Celsius and will be concentrated primarily in the western and southwestern regions, as well as parts of southern Saudi Arabia. The remaining regions will also experience a rise in temperatures, but to a lesser extent than the aforementioned areas.
Regional climate changes and the historical context of the Kingdom's weather
Historically, the Arabian Peninsula has been characterized by a very hot and arid climate during the summer months, with some areas, particularly in the east and central regions, recording record-breaking temperatures approaching 50 degrees Celsius at the peak of the season. These forecasts, issued by the National Center of Meteorology, come within the context of monitoring global and regional climate changes affecting the entire Middle East. In recent years, the region has witnessed an increase in the frequency of heat waves due to global climate phenomena such as El Niño and global warming, making close monitoring of weather reports crucial for both citizens and residents to avoid the risks of heat stress.
Expected effects and the importance of early preparation for the season
The importance of these climate reports extends far beyond simply knowing the daily weather; their impact reaches multiple vital sectors both locally and regionally. Locally, these forecasts enable service and health authorities to develop proactive plans to manage the increased electricity demand during the summer months due to air conditioning use, and to provide health guidelines for preventing heatstroke, especially for those working outdoors. This data also affects the agriculture, water, and domestic tourism sectors, helping to organize summer events in temperate mountainous regions like Asir and Al-Baha, which are important tourist destinations during the scorching summer months. In this regard, the center announced its intention to issue a detailed climate report that will accurately outline the characteristics of summer weather to ensure the preparedness of all relevant sectors.
