The Ministry of Interior's plan to secure the holy sites during the Hajj season

The Saudi Ministry of Interior held an important press conference for Hajj security forces leaders at the Unified Security Operations Center (911) in Makkah, to review the security, traffic, and organizational plans for the Hajj season. This conference reflects the wise leadership's commitment to securing the holy sites and ensuring the safety of pilgrims. A number of security leaders participated in the conference, including the Director of Public Security and Head of the Hajj Security Committee, Lieutenant General Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Bassami, the Commander of the Special Emergency Forces, the Director of Civil Defense, and the Acting Director General of Passports. The conference highlighted relevant instructions and guidelines to ensure a safe and smooth Hajj season.
The Kingdom's efforts in serving the pilgrims have evolved
Throughout history, the care and protection of pilgrims has been a top priority for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since its unification. Crowd management mechanisms have evolved dramatically over the past decades, transitioning from traditional methods to the use of the latest global technologies. This historical development reflects the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to providing the best possible services, with massive investments in infrastructure, such as the expansion of the Two Holy Mosques, the development of transportation networks, and the establishment of advanced crisis management centers. These cumulative efforts have made the Saudi experience in managing millions of pilgrims a globally studied model, admired and appreciated by all Islamic countries.
Advanced strategies for securing holy sites
Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Bassami affirmed the Kingdom's government's provision of substantial material and human resources to implement and ensure the success of plans related to serving the pilgrims of the Holy Mosque. He explained that the general plan for the tasks and responsibilities of the Hajj security forces this year has been approved by His Royal Highness the Minister of Interior, Chairman of the Supreme Hajj Committee. He emphasized that the forces' priority is maintaining the security and safety of pilgrims during their rituals until their safe departure. This necessitates imposing a tight security cordon around the entrances to Mecca to prevent the entry of unregistered pilgrims, while also monitoring and tracking misleading advertisements and fraudulent Hajj offices, and referring those involved to the appropriate authorities.
Traffic management and the use of artificial intelligence
Hajj security forces are managing and regulating traffic in the central area to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles and pedestrians, while remaining fully prepared to address any security breaches. In a related context, the Director General of Civil Defense, Major General Dr. Hamoud bin Suleiman Al-Faraj, explained that the Civil Defense forces have completed their preparations in preventative, awareness-raising, and operational aspects. He noted the integration of technology and artificial intelligence in parking management through the Holy Sites Operations Center and the Command and Control Center, praising the efforts of volunteers and the collaborative coordination in responding to emergencies.
Integration of services across land, sea and air ports
For his part, Major General Dr. Saleh bin Saad Al-Murabba, Acting Director General of Passports, indicated that there is a comprehensive plan in place to provide services to pilgrims, based on full preparedness to receive them through all entry points, including the “Makkah Route” initiative. He announced that the number of pilgrims arriving from outside the Kingdom has reached more than 1.5 million so far, most of whom arrived via air travel. He also warned of severe penalties awaiting those transporting pilgrims in violation of regulations, including imprisonment for up to six months and a fine of up to 50,000 riyals for each violation, in addition to deportation of the expatriate transporter and confiscation of the vehicle.
Regional and international dimensions of a successful Hajj season
The success of the security and organizational plans has far-reaching implications, extending to crucial regional and international dimensions. Regionally, this success reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leader of the Islamic world, capable of hosting millions of people in a limited geographical area and within a specific timeframe with the highest levels of security. Internationally, the meticulous organization reflects the bright, civilized image of Islam and the Kingdom, sending reassuring messages to the governments of countries sending Hajj delegations, confirming that their citizens are in safe hands. These efforts also contribute to stimulating the economic cycle associated with the Hajj and Umrah sector, supporting the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to diversify income sources and provide a distinguished and safe spiritual experience.
