SDAIA Technologies for Hajj Services: Advanced Systems to Facilitate the Hajj Journey

In a pioneering move reflecting the digital transformation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, SDAIA's technologies as a key element in facilitating the Hajj pilgrimage. The Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) has equipped the initiative's lounge at Blaise Diagne International Airport in Senegal with various advanced technologies. This strategic move aims to streamline and facilitate travel procedures for pilgrims before they depart their home countries. This achievement is part of the "Makkah Route" initiative, launched for the first time this year in Senegal, with SDAIA serving as the exclusive digital enabler for this significant initiative.
Historical context and ongoing development of the Makkah Route Initiative
The Makkah Route Initiative dates back to 2017 (1438 AH), when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia launched it as part of its Vision 2030 programs to enhance Hajj and Umrah services. From its inception, the initiative aimed to streamline procedures for pilgrims from their home countries, starting with electronic visa issuance, continuing through passport and customs procedures, and culminating in baggage tagging and sorting. This initiative has been a game-changer in crowd management and travel facilitation, serving over 1,254,994 pilgrims from across the Muslim world since its launch, reflecting the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to serving Islam and Muslims.
The role of SDAIA technologies in serving pilgrims in enhancing privacy and security
To ensure the highest levels of efficiency, the technical team at SDAIA has developed a suite of highly secure systems that meet global service standards. SDAIA's services for pilgrims extend beyond software to include integrated system operation and support, and the provision of mobile units equipped with the latest biometric data recording devices. The authority has also ensured the availability of advanced backup systems to guarantee uninterrupted operations, enhancing the security of pilgrim data and ensuring rapid processing. The SDAIA team comprises a select group of Saudi engineers and technicians who work around the clock to connect, activate, and operate workstations in record time.
The local, regional, and international impact of facilitating the journey of pilgrims
This technological advancement has far-reaching dimensions and implications. Domestically, this success reinforces Saudi Arabia's position as a leader in digital transformation and artificial intelligence, and underscores its unparalleled ability to manage the world's largest human gatherings with exceptional efficiency. Regionally and internationally, the provision of these advanced services in countries like Senegal and other Muslim-majority nations has a profoundly positive impact on pilgrims, saving them hours of waiting upon arrival at the Kingdom's airports. Upon arrival, pilgrims are transferred directly to dedicated buses that transport them to their accommodations in Mecca and Medina, while their luggage is delivered by the relevant authorities.
Integrating national efforts for the success of the initiative
This exceptional success would not have been possible without concerted national efforts. The Ministry of Interior is implementing this initiative for the eighth year in close collaboration with several government entities, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Hajj and Umrah, and Media. The General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, the General Authority of Endowments, the General Directorate of Passports, and the Guests of God Service Program are also participating. This integrated effort is supported by the digital partner, stc Group, embodying a unique model of joint institutional work aimed at providing the highest quality services to pilgrims and facilitating their performance of the Hajj rituals with complete peace of mind and ease.
