Medical breakthrough: Successful separation of conjoined Filipino twins in Riyadh

In a new medical achievement added to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's record of successes, a specialized medical and surgical team successfully separated conjoined Filipino twins Akhlia and Morris Ann. This accomplishment reflects the advanced level of medical care available in Saudi hospitals. The complex surgery was performed at King Abdullah Specialized Children's Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, affiliated with the Ministry of National Guard, in Riyadh, bringing a new chapter of hope to the twins' family.
Stages of surgery to separate conjoined Filipino twins and details of the achievement
Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court, Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, and head of the medical and surgical team, explained that the separation surgery of the conjoined Filipino twins was a success, thanks to God and the efforts of the distinguished medical staff. The third stage of the delicate surgery lasted approximately 12 hours and 45 minutes from the onset of anesthesia. A team of 30 physicians, including consultants and specialists, along with nursing and technical staff from various specialties, including anesthesia, intensive care, advanced radiology, and plastic surgery, participated in this heroic operation. Dr. Al-Rabeeah indicated that two more stages (the fourth and fifth) remain, involving reconstruction, cosmetic procedures, and skull closure, which are expected to last several more hours to ensure the safety of the two girls.
A history full of successes for the Saudi program for separating twins
This achievement is not a sudden occurrence, but rather the culmination of a long and distinguished history of the Saudi Program for Separating Conjoined Twins, spanning more than 35 years. This operation marks the 70th successful procedure performed by the program, and the third involving twins from the Philippines. Over the past three decades, the program has studied and evaluated 157 cases from 27 countries worldwide, solidifying the Kingdom's position as a leading global medical destination in this rare and complex specialty. The accumulated expertise of Saudi physicians has made Riyadh a beacon of hope for many families facing these rare medical conditions, providing care according to the highest international standards.
Human dimensions and global impact of medical achievement
The success of these operations transcends geographical boundaries, leaving a profound impact at the local, regional, and international levels. Locally, this success reinforces the confidence of citizens and residents in the efficiency of the Saudi healthcare system and its ability to handle the most complex medical cases. Regionally, it underscores the Kingdom's leadership in the Middle East healthcare sector. Internationally, these initiatives embody the Kingdom's noble humanitarian mission, providing exceptional medical care to those in need from around the world without discrimination. This humanitarian role reflects Saudi Arabia's soft power and its unwavering commitment to supporting global relief and medical efforts, under the guidance and generous patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and his Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
A message of thanks and gratitude from the twins' family
At the conclusion of this remarkable humanitarian event, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, on behalf of the medical team, expressed his deepest gratitude to the wise leadership for their unwavering support of the program. He also commended the efforts of all members of the surgical team, especially Dr. Mutasim Al-Zoubi, a consultant in pediatric neurosurgery. For their part, the family of the Filipino twins expressed their profound appreciation to the leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the exceptional medical care and generous hospitality, acknowledging the tremendous efforts of the medical team in saving their daughters' lives and granting them a chance at a normal and independent life.
