The Shura Council calls for improving the quality of communication and internet services in the Kingdom
The Shura Council held its twenty-sixth regular session of the second year of its ninth term, chaired by the Council's Vice President, Dr. Meshal bin Fahm Al-Sulami, via video conference. During this session, the Council discussed the annual report of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, with members calling for the improvement and development of communication and internet services in all regions of the Kingdom, and linking these services to user satisfaction indicators to ensure the best possible quality for citizens and residents.
Digital transformation in the Kingdom and Vision 2030
The Shura Council's calls for enhancing the efficiency of digital infrastructure come within the framework of ongoing efforts to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Since the launch of the Vision, the Kingdom has witnessed a tremendous leap in the communications and information technology sector, leading in numerous global indicators for internet speed and 5G network coverage. The Council recognizes that sustaining this excellence requires periodic review and continuous development to meet the growing needs of the public and private sectors, as well as individuals in various provinces and cities.
The impact of developing communication and internet services on the national economy
Improving connectivity and internet services extends far beyond entertainment and daily communication, forming the backbone of the modern digital economy. Providing robust and reliable networks supports entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), facilitates e-commerce, and attracts foreign investment in emerging technologies and artificial intelligence. This also positively impacts the quality of life and the delivery of remote educational and healthcare services in remote areas.
Empowering artisans and supporting small and medium enterprises
In addition to the telecommunications sector, the Shura Council issued important resolutions concerning the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, calling for the development of methodologies to measure the economic and social impact of its programs and to empower artisans and entrepreneurs. The Council also discussed the annual report of the General Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises (Monsha’at), where Dr. Abdullah Al-Najjar called for launching a national initiative to promote the international expansion of these enterprises through integrated financing and marketing packages.
Enhancing care for people with disabilities and improving the efficiency of government spending
As part of its commitment to social responsibility, the Council discussed the annual report of the Authority for the Care of Persons with Disabilities. Members called for the provision of assistive devices and the facilitation of free or subsidized transportation to hospitals, particularly in remote governorates. Separately, the Council addressed the report of the Government Spending and Projects Efficiency Authority, where Dr. Asim Madkhali proposed setting specific timeframes for processing government agencies' requests to expedite project completion without delays.
