The Kingdom condemns the targeting of UNIFIL forces in Lebanon and demands accountability

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strongest condemnation of the targeting of UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon. This firm stance followed the recent attack on a UNIFIL position, which resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to others. The Kingdom reiterated its complete and utter rejection of these repeated attacks, which violate international law and diplomatic norms.
A history fraught with challenges for the UN peacekeeping mission
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established by Security Council Resolutions 425 and 426 of March 1978 to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, restore international peace and security, and assist the Lebanese government in extending its effective authority in the region. Over the decades, and particularly after the 2006 war and the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, the force's mandate was expanded to include monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces. Despite its neutral humanitarian and security nature, the mission has repeatedly faced serious field challenges and attacks that have threatened the safety of its personnel, highlighting the precarious situation in southern Lebanon.
Serious repercussions from targeting UNIFIL forces in the region
This latest escalation carries extremely serious dimensions and repercussions at the local, regional, and international levels. At the Lebanese level, undermining UNIFIL's operations contributes to increased security instability and hinders efforts to protect civilians in border villages. Regionally and internationally, such attacks pose a direct threat to the UN-sponsored collective security system and increase the likelihood of the region sliding into a full-blown, uncontrollable confrontation. The international stances expressing solidarity with the mission affirm that any attack on the safety of peacekeepers is an attack on international legitimacy and its prestige.
Saudi Arabia's firm stance and calls for international accountability
In light of this tragic event, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stressed the necessity of conducting transparent and independent investigations to uncover the circumstances of this blatant attack, demanding that all parties and entities that assaulted peacekeepers and humanitarian aid workers be held accountable. Saudi diplomacy affirmed that protecting UN personnel is not an option but an international obligation incumbent upon all parties to a conflict under international humanitarian law. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded its statement by offering its deepest condolences to the family of the fallen soldier and to his government, expressing its sincere wishes for a speedy recovery for all those injured.
