Germany doubts Russia's concessions in Ukraine negotiations
The German government expressed deep skepticism on Friday about the likelihood of Russia making any substantial concessions aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, coinciding with upcoming talks between Russian, Ukrainian, and American officials. These statements come at a sensitive juncture in the Russian-Ukrainian war, as international attention focuses on the possibility of finding a diplomatic solution to the protracted crisis.
Doubts about Russian intentions
At a regular press conference in Berlin, German government spokesman Stephan Mayer stated that Berlin has legitimate and important questions about Moscow's willingness to relinquish its "maximum demands." He explained that while the European side was not invited to participate directly in this round of trilateral talks, it was consulted beforehand, reflecting the ongoing coordination among Western allies.
German concerns center on the nature of any potential agreement; the spokesperson stressed that the goal must be "establishing a lasting peace," not merely a tactical truce. He added, warning, "Nothing of value will be achieved if a peace agreement ultimately amounts to nothing more than a respite for Russia, which it uses to regroup and launch new attacks in the future.".
The dilemma of maximalist demands and withdrawal
These doubts arise as the Kremlin insists on strict preconditions for the trilateral meeting, most notably the demand for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the eastern regions (Donbas) and the areas annexed by Russia, considering this a necessary condition for any settlement. Kyiv, on the other hand, categorically rejects these conditions, viewing them as an infringement on its sovereignty and territorial integrity, thus placing significant obstacles in the way of negotiations even before they begin.
Historically, previous agreements such as Minsk have failed to end the tension, making the West more cautious about dealing with Russian promises without concrete guarantees on the ground.
Security guarantees and the European position
In a related context, the German official emphasized the paramount importance of the "security guarantees" that the West must provide to Ukraine to ensure that aggression is not repeated. For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sharply criticized Kyiv's European backers, saying the continent "seems lost" in its attempts to influence US policy and pointing to a lack of firm political will to confront Russian President Vladimir Putin. This statement reflects Ukrainian frustration with the slow pace of decisive action that could shift the balance of power or hasten the end of the war.
