In a strategic move reflecting rapid technological advancements, the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) in Saudi Arabia launched a specialization in Robotics and Artificial Intelligenceat the start of the current academic year 1447 AH (corresponding to the second half of 2025). This specialized program falls under the Electronic Technology Department within the Technical Colleges Diploma Program. The first phase witnessed significant interest, with a total of 387 trainees accepted, underscoring the awareness among Saudi youth of the importance of modern technologies in shaping the future of the labor market.

The historical context of digital transformation in the Kingdom

The move towards advanced technologies was not a sudden development, but rather a natural extension of the digital transformation journey that began with the announcement of Saudi Vision 2030 in 2016. Since then, the Kingdom has laid a solid foundation for a sophisticated digital infrastructure, culminating in the establishment of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) in 2019, which serves as the national authority on all matters related to data and smart technologies. This historical context, rich with achievements, paved the way for educational and training institutions, particularly technical training, to update their academic programs to align with the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and meet the growing needs of the local and global labor market.

The importance of robotics and artificial intelligence specialization and its overall impact

is highlighted of robotics and artificial intelligence specializations by their profound impact on multiple levels. Locally, this program contributes to creating high-quality and sustainable job opportunities for Saudi youth and supports efforts to diversify the national economy away from oil dependency by building a vibrant knowledge-based economy. Regionally, graduating qualified national talent reinforces Saudi Arabia's leadership as a regional hub for innovation and technology in the Middle East. Internationally, this approach positions the Kingdom among the leading nations in the field of artificial intelligence, thereby increasing production efficiency, improving quality of life, and making Saudi talent highly competitive in global markets.

The Year of Artificial Intelligence 2026 and Keeping Pace with Innovation

In this context, the Deputy Governor for Training, Dr. Adel bin Hamad Al-Zunaidi, explained that the inclusion of this specialization primarily aims to prepare qualified national talent capable of designing, developing, maintaining, and operating smart systems. The training also includes the application of machine learning technologies across various vital sectors. Dr. Al-Zunaidi emphasized that the commencement of the training coincides with the Cabinet's decision to designate 2026 as the "Year of Artificial Intelligence." This alignment reflects the institution's commitment to keeping pace with the national drive to support innovation and to embodying its leadership in aligning its outputs with the evolving needs of the business sector.

Developing the training plan and accredited colleges

The program was launched as a first phase in three leading technical colleges geographically distributed to serve a wide range of trainees: the Applied Technical College in Abha, the Applied Technical College in Riyadh, and the Technical College for Communications and Information in Jeddah. The General Directorate of Curricula worked diligently to develop the training plan according to the highest internationally recognized standards in this field. Ambitions do not stop there; there is a strategic plan for future expansion through the launch of advanced training tracks covering specialized and diverse fields within artificial intelligence and machine learning, thus ensuring a continuous flow of technical talent to meet the nation's aspirations.
