Saudi Arabia at the Security Council: Decisive messages for the stability of Yemen

As part of the ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to end the Yemeni crisis and establish comprehensive peace, the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, participated in a UN Security Council session dedicated to discussing developments in the Republic of Yemen. The Kingdom's statement conveyed highly significant political and security messages, reflecting Riyadh's vision for the future of Yemen and its commitment to its unity and territorial integrity.
Supporting legitimacy and the peace process
Ambassador Al-Wasel reiterated the Kingdom's firm and unwavering support for the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, headed by Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, and for the legitimate Yemeni government. This support stems from the Kingdom's commitment to enabling Yemeni state institutions to fulfill their duties and achieve the aspirations of the Yemeni people for security, stability, and development. The Kingdom views the Presidential Leadership Council as the legitimate framework under which all Yemeni factions must unite to restore the state and end the coup, thereby strengthening the prospects for a comprehensive political solution based on the agreed-upon terms of reference.
Warning of military escalation in the south
In discussing security challenges, the Kingdom expressed its regret and concern regarding the recent military movements undertaken by the Southern Transitional Council in the governorates of Hadramawt and Al-Mahra. The Saudi representative indicated that these military operations on the Kingdom's southern border not only pose a threat to Saudi national security but also constitute a genuine danger to the security and stability of Yemen and the entire region. This warning stems from the Kingdom's view that any escalation of military activity will undermine efforts to unify the Yemeni ranks and create new flashpoints that impede the peace process.
Humanitarian breakthrough and initiatives for dialogue
On the humanitarian and confidence-building front, the Kingdom welcomed the recent agreement reached in the Sultanate of Oman regarding the exchange of prisoners and detainees. Riyadh considers this step a fundamental building block in alleviating the humanitarian suffering of thousands of Yemeni families and a positive indicator that enhances opportunities for building trust between the conflicting parties, thus paving the way for more in-depth political negotiations.
Comprehensive conference on the Southern issue
In response to internal political challenges, Ambassador Al-Wasel revealed the Kingdom's acceptance of the Presidential Leadership Council Chairman's request to convene a comprehensive conference in Riyadh. This conference aims to bring together all southern factions at a single negotiating table to discuss just and equitable solutions to the southern issue. This invitation underscores the Kingdom's pivotal role as a mediator and supporter of Yemeni-Yemeni dialogue, emphasizing that sustainable solutions can only be achieved through political consensus and cooperation among all Yemeni forces and factions to ensure a secure and stable future for Yemen.
