Saudi Arabia's humanitarian efforts: $142 billion to support 173 countries

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to solidify its leading position as one of the world's largest aid donors, with its total humanitarian, development, and charitable assistance since its inception exceeding US$142 billion. These figures reflect the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to the principles of international solidarity, having implemented more than 8,457 development and relief projects across 173 countries worldwide, without any ethnic or religious discrimination.
King Salman Center: Saudi Arabia's arm of benevolence
The establishment of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center on May 13, 2015, marked a pivotal turning point in the institutionalization of Saudi humanitarian work, making it the official umbrella organization for providing foreign aid. Since its inception, the Center has successfully implemented 3,911 projects valued at over US$8.255 billion in 109 countries. These efforts have focused on vital sectors including food security, health, shelter, and education, with particular priority given to countries suffering from acute crises such as Palestine, Yemen, Syria, and Sudan.
Historical context: A consistent approach since the founding
These efforts were not a spur-of-the-moment decision, but rather an extension of a consistent policy adopted by the Kingdom since the era of its founder, King Abdulaziz – may God have mercy on him. This approach has evolved over the decades to align with international changes, culminating in the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which has given significant attention to humanitarian work, considering it part of the Kingdom's moral obligations and its pivotal role in the international community. This long history reflects the transformation of Saudi aid from mere emergency donations to a sustainable, institutionalized system aimed at achieving long-term development in beneficiary countries.
Twin separation program: A global medical leader
Among the Kingdom's distinguished humanitarian achievements is the Saudi Program for Separating Conjoined Twins, launched in 1990. This unique program, the first of its kind globally, has not only offered hope to families in need but has also demonstrated the global expertise of Saudi medical professionals. The program has performed 67 successful complex surgeries and studied 152 cases from 28 countries across five continents, covering all expenses, thus becoming a model for harnessing science to serve humanity.
Strategic impact and international dimension
The importance of Saudi aid transcends its material dimension, forming a cornerstone in bolstering regional and international stability. By supporting fragile economies and providing essential services in conflict zones, the Kingdom contributes to mitigating waves of refugees and illegal migration, and supports the United Nations' efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Kingdom's commemoration of World Humanitarian Day on December 20th underscores the continuation of this pivotal role, which positions Riyadh as a capital of humanity and a trusted partner in addressing global crises.
