The development of the Saudi education system: The Saudi-Canadian Forum

During the opening of the second Saudi-Canadian Education Partnership Forum in Toronto, Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Inas Al-Issa affirmed that academic cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Canada is a fundamental and deeply rooted pillar of their joint educational endeavors. She explained that the Saudi education system is undergoing a major developmental leap, making it more competitive and closely linked to innovation and sustainable economic development, clearly aligning with the strategic objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
Roots of academic cooperation between the Kingdom and Canada
The broader context and historical background of cooperation between Riyadh and Ottawa in the education sector extends back decades, with Canada being one of the primary destinations for Saudi students on scholarships abroad. This cultural and scientific exchange has contributed to the graduation of thousands of Saudi professionals, particularly in the medical, engineering, and technological fields. Following the resounding success of the inaugural forum held in Riyadh in 2024, this second edition aims to build upon this historical legacy of collaboration, transforming it from mere student exchanges into comprehensive institutional partnerships focused on advanced scientific research and knowledge transfer.
The importance and impact of the development of the Saudi education system regionally and internationally
The significance of this event lies in its reflection of the radical transformation underway in the Saudi education system, a transformation whose impact extends beyond the local sphere to encompass regional and international dimensions. Locally, these partnerships contribute to meeting the evolving needs of the labor market and supporting a knowledge-based economy. Regionally, the Kingdom reinforces its position as a leading hub for innovation and higher education in the Middle East. Internationally, the openness of Saudi educational institutions to their prestigious Canadian counterparts underscores the Kingdom's commitment to implementing global best practices, thereby raising the rankings of Saudi universities in international indices and attracting foreign investment in the education, research, and development sectors.
Broad national and international integration
The forum was distinguished by its broad participation, encompassing approximately 33 diverse Saudi entities, including ministries, national institutions, and a range of public and private universities and institutes, in addition to research centers, hospitals, and cultural attachés in Canada and the United States. Conversely, the Canadian side maintained a strong presence, represented by more than 45 prestigious universities and educational institutions, reflecting a mutual desire to expand cooperation and develop the educational and research environment. This large gathering aims to leverage international expertise and integrate global best practices in education within national institutions to enhance the quality of academic and professional outputs across various vital fields.
Shared visions for a promising future
The forum's agenda included two intensive dialogue sessions featuring leading academics and specialists from both sides, aimed at envisioning a more effective collaborative future. The first session focused on discussing institutional and national priorities in light of the major transformations brought about by Vision 2030, ensuring that academic plans align with the demands of the global labor market. The second session was dedicated to exploring ways to enhance joint cooperation in technical and vocational training and the development of specialized skills for students and trainees, keeping pace with the rapid technological advancements the world is witnessing today across various industrial and technological sectors.
Fruitful investment partnerships and field visits
The events witnessed significant momentum through specialized bilateral meetings aimed at building effective strategic partnerships and showcasing promising investment opportunities in the education sector. A crucial meeting was also organized on the sidelines of the forum by the Arab-Canadian Business Council, in cooperation with the Canadian Embassy in the Kingdom and the Saudi-Canadian Business Council, to explore prospects for knowledge-based economic cooperation. The Saudi delegation concluded its activities with field visits to a number of universities and specialized colleges in the Canadian province of Ontario to learn about leading practices, underscoring the forum's role as a pivotal platform for strengthening educational, research, and health cooperation between the two countries.
