Saudi-Dutch cooperation to promote agricultural sustainability and poultry processing

agreement was signed Saudi-Dutch cooperation under the auspices of the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mashiti. The strategic and commercial memorandum of understanding, concluded with a leading Dutch company, aims to find innovative solutions for processing poultry farm waste. This step seeks to maximize the utilization of these wastes and transform them into value-added agricultural and industrial products, thus supporting initiatives of mutual interest and enhancing opportunities for reciprocal investment between the two parties.
Strategic context towards achieving environmental sustainability
This agreement falls within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to achieve the goals of Vision 2030, which places great emphasis on environmental protection and the sustainability of natural resources. Historically, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has sought to adopt global best practices to reduce waste and increase production efficiency in the livestock and agricultural sectors. The Netherlands is globally recognized as a leader in agricultural innovation and green technologies, making any cooperation in this area a vital bridge for knowledge transfer and the localization of modern technologies in the Kingdom. This approach reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to transitioning from traditional agricultural systems to modern, innovation-driven systems that reduce carbon emissions.
Supporting circular economy initiatives and organic fertilizer production
The signed agreement includes a comprehensive strategy for high-level cooperation to explore and enhance shared opportunities. This strategy aims to provide practical solutions that promote efficient resource utilization, while also supporting pioneering initiatives in the circular economy and agricultural sustainability. In this context, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture also oversaw the signing of a framework agreement for technical cooperation and data exchange. This framework agreement focuses on mechanisms for receiving and marketing organic fertilizers produced from poultry waste, ensuring full integration between processing, reuse, and sustainable economic utilization. The memorandum also covers the exchange of technical expertise and observations regarding the results of field trials and applications, as well as joint coordination concerning technical visits and related meetings to ensure maximum benefit.
The economic and environmental dimensions of the success of any Saudi-Dutch cooperation
This strategic approach is of paramount importance and has a far-reaching impact. Locally, the project will contribute to enhancing Saudi Arabia's food security by providing high-quality organic fertilizers that enrich the soil and increase crop yields, while also ensuring the safe and hygienic disposal of poultry waste, which has posed a significant environmental and health challenge. Regionally, the success of this model will solidify the Kingdom's position as a leading nation in the Middle East in implementing the principles of a circular agricultural economy. Internationally, this project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to climate action and responsible production and consumption. The integration of advanced Dutch technology with Saudi Arabia's ambitious vision creates a model for transforming environmental challenges into promising economic opportunities that will benefit future generations.
