The Qaysariyah market is bustling with traditional costumes in preparation for the founding day

As the anniversary of Saudi Arabia's founding, which falls on February 22nd each year, the historic Al-Qaysariyah Market in Al-Ahsa Governorate has become a prime destination for Saudi families seeking to evoke the spirit of the past and the history of the first Saudi state. The market, one of the oldest in the Arabian Gulf region, is witnessing a surge in commercial activity and an unprecedented demand for traditional clothing, reflecting a deep sense of national identity.

Caesarea: A Gateway to History and Heritage

The Qaisariya Market is more than just a shopping center; it's a centuries-old historical landmark and an integral part of Al-Ahsa's heritage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On national holidays like this, the market reclaims its pivotal role as a hub for traditional crafts, its aisles adorned with the renowned Al-Ahsa bishts, embroidered headbands, and daglats, offering visitors a shopping experience steeped in history.

The shops in the market recorded an early turnout from the locals to buy the celebration supplies, with “bishts” of all kinds taking center stage, especially “al-Barqa,” which was in high demand because of its symbolism of status and social prestige rooted in Saudi culture.

Popular fashion market boom

The market was bustling with activity, as merchants ensured a wide variety of traditional clothing was available to suit all tastes and ages. The displays included shemaghs, daglas, and vests embroidered with heritage designs. Field visits revealed a remarkable influx of families purchasing clothing for both children and men, reflecting the community's pride in its historical roots and its desire to celebrate the occasion in a manner befitting the three centuries of Saudi history.

In this context, visitor Abdullah Al-Hajri expressed his pride in being at the market to buy bishts (traditional men's cloaks) for himself and his children, considering them an extension of history, and believing that celebrating this day instills in them a sense of belonging to their roots. He pointed out that the founding day is a beautiful day that embodies the meanings of belonging and pride, emphasizing: "We want to contribute to our nation and celebrate this occasion that is dear to our hearts, and we ask God Almighty to protect our country and perpetuate its security and prosperity.".

The return of "King Abdulaziz's precision" and the embroidered headband

Among the most prominent features of this year's preparations is the strong return of the traditional attire associated with the kings and leaders of the Kingdom. Bisht specialist Mohammed Al-Amir revealed the revival of the historical "King Abdulaziz Bisht," meticulously recreating its intricate details and scattered embellishments as they were crafted in the past, making it the iconic garment of the Kingdom's founding this year. He noted the increased demand for "Marina" and "Wabar" fabrics, crafted with the finest patterns, emphasizing that the Al-Ahsa Bisht remains a symbol of dignity and a work of art passed down through generations.

The "gold-embroidered agal" (or "shatfa") has also made a strong comeback, historically associated with the attire of kings and princes. Agal maker Saleh Al-Sultan stated that prices vary depending on quality and craftsmanship, starting at nominal prices for ordinary types and jumping to 1,500 riyals for luxurious, meticulously handcrafted pieces, each of which can take between four and seven days to perfect the details of the gold zari (gold thread).

An occasion that touches the heart

Shoppers emphasized that preparing for National Day goes beyond mere shopping; it's an expression of love and loyalty. Citizen Othman Al-Mulhem stated that National Day resides in our hearts before it is a mere occasion, noting that buying traditional clothing instills in children a sense of the day's significance and value. He said, "National Day needs no introduction; it is in our hearts above all else. Today, we came to the market specifically to shop for necessities and clothes that will bring joy to our children, especially national dress, which expresses their love for and belonging to this nation.".

This economic and cultural activity in the Al-Qaysariyah market reflects the great importance of the founding day, not only as a national occasion, but also as an engine for the local economy and a supporter of Saudi craftsmen who preserve the heritage of fathers and grandfathers from extinction.
