Saudi Arabia's role in enhancing global maritime security

In a move reaffirming its unwavering commitment to global stability, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Public Transport Authority, participated in the extraordinary session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council held in London. The Kingdom's delegation was headed by its Permanent Representative to the IMO, Engineer Kamal bin Mohammed Al-Junaidi. This active participation underscores the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to enhance maritime security , a matter of paramount importance given its direct impact on global trade and the stability of the international economy.
Roots of strategic cooperation with the International Maritime Organization
Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's participation in international maritime forums is not a recent development, but rather the culmination of decades of close cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The Kingdom joined the IMO recognizing the importance of its strategic geographic location, connecting three continents and overlooking vital waterways such as the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. Over the years, Saudi Arabia has contributed to the formulation and support of numerous resolutions and agreements aimed at regulating navigation and securing the seas against various threats, making it an active and influential member of the IMO Council and a trusted partner relied upon by the international community in establishing the rules of maritime law.
The overall impact of ensuring maritime navigation security
The relentless pursuit of enhanced maritime security has strategic dimensions that extend beyond local borders to the regional and international arenas. Locally, this security ensures the smooth flow of exports and imports, supporting the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to transform the country into a global logistics hub. Regionally, the Kingdom plays a pivotal role in protecting waterways from any threats that could disrupt shipping, positively impacting the security of neighboring countries. Internationally, the stability of these waterways guarantees the stability of global energy markets, as a significant percentage of oil supplies pass through these straits, in addition to maintaining the efficiency of global supply chains upon which the global economy depends to meet humanity's daily needs.
Strict adherence to international safety agreements
During the session, Engineer Kamal Al-Junaidi delivered a speech on behalf of the Kingdom's delegation, emphasizing Saudi Arabia's full commitment to the provisions of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). He explained that this commitment is translated into practice through the meticulous application of navigational warnings, the development of search and rescue capabilities, and the highly efficient guidance of vessels to avoid maritime hazards. These stringent measures reflect the Kingdom's keenness to protect lives and property in the often challenging maritime environment.
Advanced strategies for protecting waterways
The Permanent Representative explained that the Kingdom consistently emphasizes the importance of protecting maritime routes and ensuring freedom of navigation. To achieve this, Saudi Arabia adopts advanced strategies, including enhancing maritime surveillance using the latest technologies and activating the exchange of intelligence and navigational information with international partners. It also works to raise the level of preparedness and rapid response to any potential threats, thus facilitating the flow of global trade through safe and stable waterways. This diligent work is an extension of the efforts of the General Authority for Transport, which represents the Kingdom and continues to implement its commitments under international treaties and actively contribute to international decision-making to ensure a safe and sustainable maritime future.
