Saudi Arabia takes the lead in the AI healthcare hackathon

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia achieved a remarkable feat by ranking first globally in the number of applications submitted to participate in the AI Healthcare Hackathon . This prominent medical technology event will be hosted by Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Al Sahafa from April 10-11, 2026. This hosting comes as part of a strategic partnership with Prince Mohammed Bin Salman College of Management and Entrepreneurship (MBSC) and the prestigious Harvard University, reflecting the Kingdom's growing stature as a global hub for innovation and advanced technology.
Strategic context: 2026, the year of artificial intelligence
This significant achievement coincides with the Saudi Cabinet's approval of designating 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence. Historically, since its inception, Saudi Vision 2030 has sought to digitize the healthcare sector and transform it into a data-driven and technologically advanced model. Successive national initiatives have paved the way for building a robust digital infrastructure, making the Kingdom a fertile ground for hosting such global events. Integrating technology into the medical sector is no longer merely an option; it has become a fundamental pillar for improving quality of life and providing proactive and precise medical services.
Record numbers at AI healthcare hackathon
Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Muhammadi, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Forum, explained that Dr. Sulaiman Al-Habib Medical Group is proud of this ranking and the remarkable turnout. In numerical terms, the Kingdom outperformed 36 participating countries, with the organizers receiving over 2,000 applications from within Saudi Arabia, out of a total of 10,000 applications submitted globally. The organizing committee is currently meticulously reviewing these applications to select 600 participants representing the Kingdom's most innovative minds, highlighting the strong passion of Saudi youth and professionals to drive transformative change in this vital sector.
National efforts combined to support medical innovation
This success would not have been possible without the unwavering support of government institutions and the private sector. Dr. Al-Muhammadi highlighted the pivotal role played by the Research, Development and Innovation Development Authority, alongside the contributions of the Ministry of Health, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), and the General Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises (Monsha’at). Leading organizations such as Human, Hyvolution, Foura, The Garage, and stc inspireU also participated. This synergy between government and private entities reflects a genuine desire to transform real-world health challenges into tangible, impactful solutions.
Expected dimensions and impacts locally and internationally
The selection of Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Group to host this event stems from its leadership as one of the largest providers of innovative healthcare services in the private sector. Locally, this hackathon will empower young Saudi talent and develop smart solutions that enhance the efficiency of Saudi hospitals. Regionally, the event reinforces the Middle East's position as a source of medical technologies, rather than merely a consumer. Internationally, connecting entrepreneurs and innovators with academics and specialists from global institutions such as Harvard University will support the growth of startups and maximize their global impact, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future for all humanity.
