Weather warnings: Rain and flash floods expected in Medina and Al-Baha

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is experiencing significant weather fluctuations during this period, with the National Center for Meteorology issuing important and urgent warnings regarding rainfall and flash floods in Medina and Al-Baha. These warnings are issued as part of the relevant authorities' commitment to the safety of citizens and residents, given the potential for accompanying weather phenomena that necessitate taking maximum precautions and adhering to official instructions issued by the competent authorities.
Alert details: Rain and flash floods in Medina and Al-Baha
The National Center for Meteorology explained in its report today that forecasts indicate light to moderate rainfall in the Madinah region, including the city of Madinah itself, as well as the governorates of Al-Ula, Khaybar, and Al-Ais. The center noted that this weather system may be accompanied by various effects, including increased surface wind activity and dust storms that could reduce horizontal visibility. Hail is also expected, along with high waves in coastal areas and flash floods in valleys and ravines. Furthermore, the report warned of strong downdrafts that could reach speeds of 60 kilometers per hour or more.
In a related development, the center issued another alert for the Al-Baha region, warning of moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds and near-zero horizontal visibility. This includes the city of Al-Baha and the governorates of Al-Qura, Al-Mandaq, Baljurashi, Bani Hassan, Al-Aqiq, and surrounding areas, with these conditions expected to persist until 9:00 PM. The alert also included light rain accompanied by thunderstorms in the governorates of Al-Makhwah, Qalwah, Al-Hajrah, and Ghamid Al-Zanad until 8:00 PM.
Climate context and weather changes in the Kingdom
Historically, the western and southwestern parts of Saudi Arabia, including the Al-Baha highlands and the Madinah region, have been known for their susceptibility to atmospheric instability, particularly during seasonal transitions. Thunderstorms typically form when moist air masses from the Red Sea converge with the high mountainous terrain, resulting in heavy rainfall and flash floods. Over the decades, the Kingdom has worked to develop its meteorological monitoring and early warning systems, with the National Center of Meteorology playing a pivotal role in providing accurate readings, significantly contributing to mitigating risks and protecting lives and public and private property.
Expected effects and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines
These weather changes have varying impacts at both the local and regional levels. On the positive side, these rains contribute to replenishing groundwater reserves and supporting the agricultural sector, which is crucial for regions like Al-Baha, renowned for its terraced fields and diverse crops. However, the heavy rainfall and resulting flash floods necessitate thorough preparation to address potential negative impacts on infrastructure and traffic.
Therefore, the General Directorate of Civil Defense and relevant authorities urged everyone to exercise caution, stay away from valleys and flood channels, and avoid using mobile phones in open areas during thunderstorms. Public awareness and adherence to preventative guidelines are the first line of defense to ensure this weather event passes safely and to minimize any potential losses resulting from severe weather fluctuations.
