Saudi Arabia's rural development program launches 7 livestock production complexes

The Saudi Rural Development Program (a sustainable agricultural rural development program) announced the completion of seven integrated model livestock production complexes, strategically located across several regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This pioneering initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of the livestock sector and provide direct and sustainable support to small-scale farmers, aligning with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 to achieve food security, develop rural communities, and advance the agricultural economy.

The historic shift in supporting livestock in the Kingdom

Historically, the livestock and animal production sector in Saudi Arabia has relied on traditional methods and open grazing, which has faced numerous challenges related to water scarcity, climate change, and production efficiency. With the launch of Vision 2030, the Kingdom has developed ambitious strategies to restructure the agricultural and livestock sector to ensure environmental and financial sustainability. The Saudi Countryside Development Program a key role in this transformation, aiming to move livestock breeders from haphazard practices to organized, scientific methods. The establishment of these seven complexes represents the culmination of years of planning to develop rural infrastructure and provide a supportive environment that ensures the sustainability and growth of scarce natural resources for future generations.

Smart geographic distribution and digital technologies for herd management

The new projects are located in vital areas including Medina, Qassim, Najran, Hail, as well as Jubail, Hafr Al-Batin, and Arar. Construction and trial operation work is currently underway to prepare these complexes to receive beneficiaries soon.

In the context of technological development, Majid Al-Buraikan, the official spokesperson for the Saudi Rural Development Program, announced the launch of the innovative digital system “Flock Smart,” designed for farm management. This system allows for precise productivity tracking, livestock health assessment, and the complete digitization of herd records to ensure the sustainability of operations and facilitate monitoring. A comprehensive set of technical studies has also been prepared to characterize small ruminants, aiming to improve breeding efficiency and enable farmers to adopt modern scientific methods that enhance meat quality and diversify income sources.

The economic and social impact of the Saudi Rural Development Program services

At the local level, this project directly contributes to improving living standards and enhancing the output of small-scale livestock farmers, with the number of beneficiaries of livestock support programs exceeding 56,000 across the Kingdom. Support was not limited to infrastructure; it also included on-the-ground training through the implementation of ten specialized training courses in the Asir, Jazan, and Qassim regions to transfer knowledge on modern feeding practices and forage resource management.

Regionally and internationally, this transformation reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leading model in implementing sustainable development and food security solutions in arid desert environments. By focusing on developing sheep, goat, and camel herds, the program contributes to reducing reliance on imported red meat, thus supporting the stability of regional markets and providing an inspiring example for countries with similar climatic conditions on how to optimally utilize available natural resources.
