Achievements of the Saudi Rural Development Program to support fishermen and agriculture

launched The Saudi Rural Development Program several large-scale initiatives and projects aimed at promoting sustainable rural agricultural development across the Kingdom. These projects included the provision of 99,976 agricultural and marine supplies, a strategic step designed to empower beneficiaries, increase production efficiency, and achieve economic sustainability in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
Strategic context for supporting food security
These steps are part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to enhance food security and diversify national income sources away from oil. Historically, many rural and coastal areas have relied on traditional agriculture and fishing as their primary sources of livelihood. With the launch of Vision 2030, the urgent need to develop these vital sectors through the introduction of modern technologies and sustainable practices has become apparent. The program aims to bridge this gap by providing direct and technical support to small-scale farmers and fishermen, thereby contributing to the stability of rural communities, reducing migration to major cities, and providing sustainable employment opportunities for the residents of these areas.
Empowering small-scale fishermen and enhancing maritime safety
The program's spokesperson, Majid Al-Buraikan, explained that the projects included significant support for small-scale fishermen, with the provision of 450 modern marine engines. These engines aim to replace old and worn-out equipment, thereby reducing unexpected breakdowns and minimizing operational risks while at sea.
In a pioneering step to ensure the safety of lives, Al-Buraikan explained that 1,000 satellite-connected distress beacons have been provided and installed on fishing boats according to the highest international safety standards. These technological devices not only contribute to saving lives in emergencies but also enhance the attractiveness of the fishing sector as a safe and sustainable source of income for future generations.
The role of the Saudi Rural Program in combating agricultural pests
On the agricultural front, the spokesperson announced the provision of four fully equipped mobile clinics for diagnosing diseases and pests affecting roses and medicinal plants. He also noted the provision of 171 pieces of modern agricultural equipment for servicing and harvesting rainfed crops in the Makkah and Jazan regions, with the aim of reducing agricultural losses and increasing productivity.
In addition, 155 modern tillers and soil preparation machines were supplied to the Jazan region, ensuring the optimal use of rainwater and available natural resources. The program also addressed research needs, supporting the research unit in Wadi Bin Hashbal in the Asir region with 18 pieces of equipment and agricultural materials to enhance the efficiency of research and applied work, which will positively impact crop quality and the development of farming methods.
Developing the beekeeping sector and improving honey quality
Al-Buraikan highlighted the significant attention given to the beekeeping sector, noting the provision and distribution of 1,800 bee colonies across the Kingdom. This support aims to improve the quality of local honey and increase production efficiency. He emphasized that this initiative supports the shift towards sustainable practices in establishing and operating queen rearing stations.
He concluded his remarks by mentioning the provision of seven specialized units for testing bee diseases and pests in quarantine facilities, including three mobile laboratories and four clinics. This integrated system aims to enhance health and veterinary oversight for the early detection of diseases, and to protect and ensure the sustainability of bee populations.
Economic dimensions and expected impacts
This comprehensive support has far-reaching dimensions and impacts. Locally, it contributes to improving the living standards of thousands of rural families and increasing profit margins by reducing production costs and minimizing agricultural losses. Regionally, the Kingdom is setting a leading example in natural resource management in arid and semi-arid environments, reinforcing its position as a leading economic power in the Middle East committed to sustainability. Internationally, these initiatives are closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to eradicating hunger, providing decent work, and protecting life below water and on land, underscoring the Kingdom's commitment to playing an active and influential role in global environmental and economic issues.
